New Year’s Eve Celebration Dinner

New Year’s Eve Celebration Dinner

Son Sean and Michelle and the daughters/grand-daughters treated us to New Year’s Eve dinner. We dined at one of our favorite eateries, Hemingway’s Bistro in Oak Park (IL). We’ve enjoyed and hosted many dinners at Hemingway’s including our Pour Boys wine group, family and anniversary celebrations

Hemingway’s was booked for the entire evening and decorated festively for the holiday (s).

We dined early to beat the crowds and allow for the children’s schedule.

Hemingway’s offered a price fixe holiday dinner but we each ordered from the traditional menu, opting for our regular favorites from a menu we know well.

From the limited but focused wine list, we started with Champagne to enjoy with our starter course (s).

Lucien Albrecht Crémant d'Alsace Brut Rosém NV

This Lucien Albrecht Crémant d'Alsace Brut Rosé French sparkling wine is from Alsace in the northeast corner of France on the German border. It is made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes using the traditional method.

Lucien Albrecht (pronounced Lu-Shen All-Bresht), one of the most distinguished producers of white wines in Alsace was founded in 1698 by Balthazar Albrecht in Orschwihr, a small village surrounded by by rolling hills and very complex and deep chalky soils with a high percentage of clay and sandstone screes, benefiting from South or Southeast exposure. ideally situated for grape-growing.

The Crémant d’Alsace Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) was created in 1976 to distinguish the wines obtained by the sparkling champagne method. The term “crémant” comes originally from Champagne but is seldom used, in recognition of the efforts made by several Alsatian winemakers, including the Maison Lucien Albrecht.

Lucien Albrecht was a pioneer in the Crémant d’Alsace, which it began producing in 1971. Today the winery produces still and sparkling wines, all produced with fruit sourced exclusively from estate vineyards, including the Grand Cru Pfingstberg and Grand Cru Spiegel.

The winemaking team is led by Jérôme Keller. Winemaker Notes - The flavors display nice strawberry and wild cherry fruit, with a touch of richness on the mid palate. It is balanced with dry, crisp acidity and complimented with a creamy texture and long finish.

This NV label was rated 90 points by Wine Enthusiast and 88 points by James Suckling.

This modest priced wine provides high QPR. - quality price ratio. Dust orange colored, medium bodied, nicely balanced strawberry with apple and pear notes with hints of orange, lemon and pain grille with fine bubbles on the dry finish

https://www.lucien-albrecht.com/our-wines/cremants-alsace-lucien-albrecht/

We ordered several selections for our starter courses:

Blue Point Oysters - six piece, cocktail sauce

Chicken Liver Pate - Dijon Mustard | Cornichons | Toasted Crostini

Foie Gras du Jour - Caramelized Fruit, Pear Slices, Candy Onions, Parsnip Puree, Balsamic Vinaigrette

For the entree course:

Linda the Roasted Stripe Bass A'la Piperade - pepper relish, golden raisins and cassoulet beans.

Michelle ordered the Grilled Steak Frites - Pommes Frites | Herb Stuffed Baked Tomato | Beurre Maitre d'Hotel.

Sean ordered the Duo of Magret Duck - parsnip puree, shitake caps, blood orange demi.

I ordered the New York Steak au Poivre - Cream Spinach | Pommes Au Gratin | Green Peppercorn Sauce

I took BYOB from our cellar for the occasion a vintage St Julien Bordeaux from one of our favorite producers for a perfect food wine pairing with the French cuisine.

Château Gruaud-Larose St Julien-Beychevelle Bordeaux 2010

We enjoyed A Visit to Château Gruaud-Larose which was one of the key highlights on our 2019 trip to the St Julien Appellation (AOC) in Bordeaux. Château Gruaud-Larose, a 2ème Cru Classé or 'second growth', one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growths) as classified in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.

This label is one of the key holdings in our cellar collection consisting of more than a dozen vintages spanning three decades dating back to 1980 including the birth year vintages of each of our kids, 1981, 1982, 1985 and 1990. We hold many vintages in large format bottles including 3 liter double magnums which we served at daughter Erin's and son-in-law Johnny's wedding.

Tonight, I selected a vintage release that I presumed to be in the ‘Goldilock’s zone’, not too old, and not too young, but just right, at the apex of its prime drinking window. I was not disappointed, this actually exceeded my highest hopes and expectations and was absolutely delicious, a perfect pairing with the dinner - especially the Foie Gras. As I have written often in these pages, an optimal food-wine pairing amplifies and ameliorates the enjoyment of both! Such was the case tonight.

This release was rated 97 points by Decanter, 96 points by James Suckling, 95 points by Wine Enthusiast and Jane Anson, 94 points by Vinous, and 93 points by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator.

Wine Enthusiast wrote, “For anybody looking for classic Bordeaux, this is the bottle to seek.” They advise to “ Keep for many years,” but this will be difficult as it is temptingly so good! Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate writes, “ … blockbuster wine, which has been built for the long haul. This is one 2010 where patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.” Thankfully I have nearly a case so will enjoy watching this age gracefully.

The producers notes about the vintage season - “Ideal ripening of all the varieties overall thanks to exceptionally dry August and September without excessive heat. Ideal harvest from first to last day allowing picking of each variety at optimum oenological maturity.”

This released was aged in 50% new oak.

Dark garnet/plum/purple colored, full bodied, full tannins and dense but balanced, smooth, polished and elegant, ripe dark raspberry, red and black currant and blueberry fruits with “loads of spice, earth, underbrush, licorice, and a hint of Provencal garrigue”, with silky tannins and a beautifully integrated tannin structure on a long and ‘very’ refined tannic structure.

Oakville Grill and Cellar, Fulton Market, Chicago

Oakville Grill and Cellar, Fulton Market, Chicago

Sunday evening, we dined in the City, in Chicago’s Fulton Market district at the tony, trendy,  Oakville Grill and Cellar with fellow Pour Boys Lyle and Dan of our Wine Group.

The upscale eatery, a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant, is stylish, rustic, contemporary California design and decorating, light, bright, airy, with an upbeat energetic vibe.

The dining room and adjacent bar were festively decorated for the holiday season.

Oakville Grill prepares California inspired Midwestern cuisine. Their “Quality Statement” says “The menus are inspired by the team’s partnerships with farms, ranches, and wineries throughout California and the Midwest ….  simply prepared dishes made with expertly sourced, seasonal ingredients.”

While unfortunately unavailable tonight, Lyle and Dan would’ve liked the normally offered as sides, ‘warm sourdough by middle brow, house-whipped butter’, and, ‘housemade focaccia bread with calabrian chili, olive truck olive oil’.

For my dinner entree, based on the extraordinary wines available, I ordered the filet of beef - ‘Creekstone filet au poivre, classic peppercorn sauce, mashed yellow finn potatoes and crispy parsley’.

Linda ordered the ‘coal roasted branzino with oven roasted tomato and buckley swiss chard’.

Dan ordered the ‘Harrison's Farm’s duck breast confit with farro risotto and local root vegetables’.

Linda ordered the ‘wood-fired brick chicken gilroy garlic confit, preserved lemon jus’.

The Oakville Grill and Cellar wine program specifically cites a “deliberate focus on high-quality, lesser-known California regions like Santa Barbara County and Santa Ynez Valley AVA’s”, as well as premiere high profile Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Paso Robles, and Santa Barbara regions and their sub-regions.
Wines are organized by the varietal, then region.

The Oakville Cellars wine selection features an extraordinary, magnificent 48 page leather bound wine list with an extensive selection of 750 plus premium, ultra-premium and cult California producers’ labels - some with multiple vintages, some with a broad rare and extensive special bottling offerings.

There are seven pages devoted to the Reserve List of rare, highly allocated and super premium labels.
There are also several pages of Half bottles, Large Format bottles, and a small selection of WBTG - Wines By the Glass.

Dan and Lyle have dined there several times and have become accustomed to taking advantage of their BYOB policy. Tonight, we each brought favorite producers and special labels from our cellars for dinner.

In order of tasting …

Lyle brought a Sangiovese Brunello

Altesino Brunello Di Montalcino 2018

We started with this Sangiovese based Brunello that Lyle brought from his cellar, since, as we expected, it was more delicate, than the bigger, bold Napa Cabs. This was ideal, better suited perhaps than the Big Reds, with the lighter entrees, the chicken, branzino, and even the duck.

I wrote about this popular producer in detail in a previous blogpost - BYOB Brunello Italian Wine and Dine at Angeli’s Italian Naperville.

https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2024/11/byob-brunello-italian-wine-and-dine-at.html

This highly acclaimed release was rated 95 points by James Suckling, 93 points by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Jeb Dunnuck, and 92 points by Wine Spectator, Decanter and Vinous.

Winemaker Notes - “Ruby-red with a garnet rim, this wine's bouquet displays ample aromas of violet, wild berries, tobacco, chocolate, and vanilla. On the palate, Altesino Brunello is rich, full-bodied, and velvety.”

Ruby-garnet colored, medium bodied, smooth, polished, full round dark raspberry and berry fruits with notes of tobacco, chocolate, dusty earth, dried flowers and black tea with fine soft tannins on the lingering finish.

Dan brought a Joseph Phelps Backus Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet.

Joseph Phelps Backus Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Our Joseph Phelps Napa Valley Winery Visit and Tasting, arranged and hosted by Dan, as featured in this blogpost, was a highlight of our Pour Boys 2017 Sonoma/Napa Wine Experience - a private tasting at the spectacular Joseph Phelps Vineyards and Winery hospitality center.

The magnificent Phelps winery, tasting facility sits overlooking Phelp's vineyards nestled in its own Spring Valley above St Helena on the western facing foothills of the Vaca range that form the eastern face of Napa Valley.

Joseph Phelps Vineyards was founded in 1973 when Joe Phelps purchased a former cattle ranch near St. Helena in the Napa Valley, the winery now controls and farms nearly 375 acres of vines on eight estate vineyards in St. Helena, the Stags Leap District, Oakville, Rutherford, Oak Knoll District, Carneros and South Napa Valley.

Phelps is best known for its flagship Napa Valley blend of red Bordeaux varietals, Insignia, first produced in 1974. Awarded Wine Spectator's "Wine of the Year" in 2005. Equally revered is this highly allocated single vineyard designated label from the esteemed estate Backus Vineyard in Oakville. Dan has an extensive collection of this label, procured as part of his Phelp’s Wine Club allocations over the years.

As I noted in these page when Dan served this wine at his daughter Hillary’s wedding, Gala celebration dinner features Phelps Backus - Insignia Napa Cabernetsyou know its a special wine when each bottle label has its own serial number. Such is the premier selection of the Joseph Phelps collection.

This release was rated 96 points by Jeb Dunnuck and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, and 93-96 points by  Vinous.

The 2014 Backus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon  is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Malbec and was aged in 100% new French oak.

Dark garnet/purple colored, full bodied, opulent, hedonistic, rich and concentrated black berry and black currant fruits with notes of cassis, dark mocha chocolate, earth, clove spice, graphite, truffle and cedar, with ripe tannins on a long finish.

Then, for a comparison of a bottle we drank the previous evening at another dinner gathering, I brought a vintage Napa Valley Howell Mountain Cabernet.

Lamborn Howell Mountain Generation I Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

Lamborn Family Vineyards is a small boutique family operation focused on distinctive terroir handcrafted Estate Cabernets and Zinfandel from their vineyards high up Howell Mountain, 10 minutes outside of the small town of Angwin in the northern Napa Valley Howell Mountain appellation. At an elevation of 2200 feet, the property is above the 1200 ft. Napa Valley fog line, the line of demarcation between Napa Valley and Howell Mtn AVA’s. With it’s near summit elevation, it occasionally experiences some winter snowfall - in February 2022 they got nearly 14 inches, blocking roads and toppling trees.

Lamborn Family Vineyards was started in 1971 when Bob and Mike Lamborn, a father and his adult son, purchased 40 acres on Howell Mountain. Eight acres are planted to vines. The 1982 debut vintage was made by winemaker Randy Dunn, a friend and neighbor. The legendary acclaimed winemaker Heidi Barrett started making Lamborn wines in 1996.

We visited the wonderful and hospitable Mike and Terry Lamborn at their estate high atop Howell Mountain during our Napa Valley Howell Mountain Wine Experience 2008 (shown below)

Mike and Terry Lamborn with wine buddy Andy, sister
Jan, Linda, and brother-in-law Bill

This Lamborn Howell Mountain Cabernet is very similar to the Outpost Howell Mountain 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon label we tasted earlier this weekend, one vintage removed, and sourced from vines literally across the road from each other, that years earlier, prior to 1998, were part of the same vineyard. That wine was featured in this blogpost - Big Reds Celebrate Big Red Win.

At twenty-two years, this is showing no discernable signs of aging, except for the dry but otherwise perfect cork that started to separate on opening. Of course the label is perfect, since it’s painted onto the glass of the large, oversize heavy bottle.

Robert Parker wrote, “there is no question that there are some surprisingly youthful 2003s that will last much longer than any of us thought at their inception.”

This 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon was aged 22 months in French oak of which 35% was new. It is a big red packaged in a heavy, oversize, premium painted glass in lieu of label bottle.

Dark garnet colored, full bodied, classic intense Howell Mountain black fruits with complex rich textured  notes of cassis, licorice, spice and earth with a pleasant, smooth tannin lingering finish.

Special Wines for Gala Thanksgiving Family Dinner

Special Wines for Gala Thanksgiving Family Dinner

We were blessed to have the entire family gathered together for a traditional gala Thanksgiving Family Dinner, complete with turkey and all the trimmings; dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, corn casserole, salad, with pecan and pumpkin pies and iced cream for dessert.

With the recent arrival of our twelfth grandchild, our core group now includes twenty-two!

I had pulled from the cellar an extensive wine flight with Sparkling White Methode Champonaise, a medley of whites, reds and dessert wines. Ryan brought several ultra-premium labels including two extraordinary limited release 100 point labels, and one of our favorite vintage premium Bordeaux.

We were then visited by dear friend Jared Gelband, who dropped in and brought a premium Super Tuscan. Readers of these pages know Jared as wine director at Italian Village Restaurant in Chicago. We’ve featured special dinners at Chicago’s oldest continuously operated family Italian Restaurant many times in these pages, where Jared’s manages a sensational ten thousand bottle Wine Spectator Award winning wine cellar there.

As is our custom, we started with a Methode Champonaise sparkling white wine.

Roederer Estate Anderson Valley Sparkling Wine

We then did a medley of premium whites, followed by a flight of spectacular reds. :

Desparada Epione Moretti Canyon Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc (Edna Valley) 2022

This is from winemaker and owner Vailia From, who draws on nearly three decades of experience working harvests, restaurant floors, importer relationships, and brokerages. She produces lively Sauvignon Blanc, Bordeaux, and Italian varietal-based wines in and around several amphorae, (twelve and counting), concrete, acacia, and French oak.

Vailia sources fruit from Desparda’s estate vineyard, Chelle Mountain, and 20+ of the California Central Coast’s finest vineyards.

"An up and coming star in the Central Coast”, writes Jeb Dunnuck in the Wine Advocate, the wines of Desparada “deliver serious depth and richness while staying pure, classy and very drinkable.”

This premium Sauvignon Blanc is from Moretti Canyon Vineyard in the Central Coast region of California, Edna Valley, located south of San Luis Obispo.

The Edna Valley was the first AVA to be granted in 1982 in San Luis Obispo County. It is unique for its terroir and long growing season.

Covering 35 square miles, the clearly defined valley is bordered by the Santa Lucia Mountains along the northeast side, low hills to the south and the San Luis Range along the southwest. Moretti Canyon Vineyard runs east into the Diablo Range, which shields it from the brunt of the marine winds coming from the north. A gap to the northeast opens into the Los Osos Valley, which meets the ocean at Morro Bay. It is this gap that funnels morning fog in the summer and brisk breezes every afternoon from the ocean into Edna Vally, creating its cool climate and long growing season.

The Moretti Canyon Vineyard covers 42 acres and enjoys mild temperatures that allow the vines to produce large berries of juicy fruit.

It was planted in 1999 by proprietor Barbara Baggett who sold the grapes are sold to Tolosa, a custom crush facility she co-owned with Courtside Cellars whose first vintage of Tolosa wine was produced at the facility in 1998. Tolosa was named after the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, which is dedicated to Saint Louis, Bishop of Toulouse in France. They continue to this day producing a portfolio of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays sourced from vintners across Edna Valley.

This 2022 release was rated 94 points by Wine Advocate and Wine Enthusiast, and CellarTrackers give it a composite 93 points.

Reviewer Matt Kettmann writes - “Energetic aromas of grass clippings, lime peels and rainy sidewalk zip across the racy nose of this bottling from vines planted more than 20 years ago. The palate is lively and super chalky, offering more lime and grass flavors as well as an appealing hint of underripe pineapple.”

Straw colored, medium bodied, complex, full and round for a Sauvignon Blanc, bright vibrant, expressive citrus fruits offset by hints of pineapple zest and chalky minerality.

2022 Epione Sauvignon Blanc

Moving to the reds …

Summer Dreams “Super Chill” Pinot Noir 2021

We then turned to this unique limited release Pinot Noir from Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast.

This is the project of legendary veteran winemaker Jayson Woodbridge whose 25-year winemaking career has been primarily focused on Bordeaux varietals in the Napa Valley under the Hundred Acre label and the recipient of more than 61, 100-point scores. Over the last decade he turned to the unique soils and extreme conditions of the West Sonoma Coast to create site specific vineyard driven wines working with  luminary winemakers – most notably St Helena-based Philippe Melka, one of our favorites.

Woodbridge’s ability to make fine wine and understand the importance of terroir, with his fortune earned as an investment banker, enabled him to purchase vineyard land in good locations. He managed it very well and produced consistently high-quality grapes to make his Hundred Acre wines.
Setting his sights on Sonoma County and the Sonoma Coast, he selected prime hillside vineyard sites, chosen for the generous slope, unique sequence of Goldridge soils, ranging from 900-1900 feet above sea level, and microclimate to add dimension to the wines. A rare, fine-grained sandy loam, Goldridge soils are known for excellent drainage, and a characteristically light and fluffy texture. The coastal climate of the region is marked by warm, dry summers and cool, damp winters.

We toured the area during our Pour Boys 2017 Sonoma Napa Wine Experiencestarting on the Sonoma Coast and worked east along the Russian River Valley ending up in Sonoma Valley.

Woodbridge works with winemaker Ashley Holland whose career has spanned California and Oregon, as well as Australia, New Zealand, and Uruguay, working with noted winemakers Bill Price, Bob Cabral, and Ryan Prichard.

Ashley and Jayson explored over a hundred vineyards before selecting vineyards with site, slope, Goldridge soils, and vine age as their primary qualifiers.

The Sonoma Coast AVA extends from San Pablo Bay to the border with Mendocino County. Established in 1987, the Sonoma Coast AVA is the largest AVA within Sonoma County. It encompasses nearly 500,000 acres and is known for its cool climate and high rainfall relative to other parts of Sonoma County. The region spans up to 20 miles inland from the Pacific coastline. Close to the Pacific, with more than twice the annual rainfall of its inland neighbors, it's warm enough to ripen wine grapes because most vineyards are above the fog line, typically ranging from 400 to 1,800 feet in elevation. The terroir is best suited for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which benefit from the region's cool temperatures and direct exposure to marine influences.

The Summer Dreams Wines estate is the former historic Petersen Ranch (Petersen dairy), located in the far reaches of Sonoma with a very large hill, almost like a tower, and hidden on one side of the wind-swept hill, amongst old oak trees. On the site is an old quarry where a small rail line used to move giant blocks of granite all the way from the Summer Dreams Ranch to the town of Sonoma.

The 96-acre property currently consists of 7.5 planted acres in the northern section of the ranch on a gently sloped hillside consisting of prized Goldridge and Osos Sandy Loams soil. Half of the vines are planted to Chardonnay and half to Pinot Noir.

The combination of prized Goldridge soil and the cooling breeze of the Petaluma wind gap makes this an ideal site within the Sonoma Coast AVA to grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Winemaker notes - “Opens with a cool note of white pepper that sits atop a medley of high-toned red fruits, including vibrant cranberry, delicate strawberry, and ripe cherry. On the palate, the wine soars effortlessly, enhanced by a seamless oak undertone that frames notes of red berry compote and hints of savory spice. The resulting palate profile is both refreshing and refined, with a long and elegant finish that leaves you feeling “irie” and chill.”

This release was rated 96 points by Lisa Peretti-Brown of the Wine Independent.

Medium ruby-purple colored, the 2022 Super Chill Pinot Noir comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant notes of violets, anise, and fertile loam, giving way to a core of blackberries and black cherries, plus a touch of garrigue. The medium to full-bodied palate is surprisingly graceful and savory, structured with very fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant.

Bright ruby colored, medium bodied, smooth, polished, vibrant sweet, ripe black raspberry and black cherry fruits with notes of floral, hints of anise and garrigue, with a smooth lingering finish.

Ryan brought from his home cellar this highly allocated super ultra-premium cult label, “Antikythera” that he has recently been able to obtain having finally graduated from the waiting list to wine club member.

Antica Terra "Antikythera" Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir 2021

The Antikythera Pinot Noir is crafted entirely from the small rocky Antica Terra estate vineyard in the northernmost part of the Eola-Amity Hills. It’s the only pinot from a vineyard that Antica Terra owns outright, planted in 1988.

The producer notes about this wine, “like the site, is a bit of an anomaly — it tends to defy characterization. There is, in every vintage, an astonishingly extreme, high-pitched aroma of cinnamon-stick coupled with a non-fruit intensity and Barolo-like tannin that speak neither to the Willamette Valley nor in some ways, pinot noir. Intensely mineral, it bears, somehow, a seemingly synesthetic resemblance to the ground from which it was born.”

The notion of No Compromise is on the wall at Antica Terra, and it was stencilled over the doorway at Sine Qua Non; to Harrison, it means, ‘keep your head down and make the most beautiful thing you can at that moment.’

Like so many exquisite, highly rated wines, this is notable for its perfection with lack of errors or flaws.

This limited release label was rated 99 points by Jeb Dunnuck, 97 points by James Suckling and Vinous,  and 95 points by Decanter.

Bright Ruby colored, medium to full bodied, refined, silky smooth, superbly balanced, polished and elegant, black and red raspberry fruits with notes of violets, wet stones, fresh herbs and spices, smooth polished fine tannins on a long finish

Ovid Hexameter 2017

This is from iconic Napa Valley producer, OVID (Publius Ovidius Naso), named for a roman poet who lived from 43 bc until 17 ad., best known for his most famous work, Metamorphoses, “a poetic retelling of the Greek myths, celebrating the themes of transformation and change.”

The producer describes this wine - “The name Hexameter is derived from the poetic meter used by Ovid in his Metamorphoses and, for that matter, in much Greek and Roman epic poetry. The concept of meter intrigues us, as meter contains, animates and organizes the information contained by a poem’s words. Transposed to wine, the vineyard is the impulse behind a poem, and the wine its meter and language. As such, the wine Hexameter reveals a certain rhythm and structure in our vineyard that articulates its clear and profound affinity for Cabernet Franc.”

This label started as part of an ‘Experiment’ and became a flagship wine. Hexameter is Cabernet Franc-focused, an intriguing Franc-centric wine, refined honing the best blocks within the vineyard.

While Cabernet Franc is a genetic parent to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it possesses unique and compelling qualities. Compared to Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc tends to be a bit lighter in body, more floral and perfumed, and sometimes a tad more wild and unpredictable. In Bordeaux, it is an essential component of the blend to add depth, breadth and spice. Its profile makes Cabernet Franc incredibly sensitive to place; and therefore is a representation of terroir. For that reason, the Hexameter label is produced to showcase the distinction of Ovid estate Pritchard Hill vineyard with soil is largely characterized by its shallow, stony and luminous red soils (reflective of powerful amounts of iron oxide).

Following primary fermentation, Hexameter wines are removed from tank and placed into barrel. A few months later, the wines are racked and blended and returned to barrel for a long, slow maturation in French oak for another 14-16 months.

Hexameter is a classic Bordeaux Blend of some Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot in small proportions, but focused on Cabernet Franc to take the lead.

Winemaker Austin Peterson contends that if OVID hadn’t been squarely established initially with  Cabernet Sauvignon, the winery’s identity today might be centered around Cabernet Franc, due to “the way it grows in the vineyards and performs in winery and in bottle”, exemplifying and showcasing the terroir of the estate.

Producer notes on the vintage - “The 2017 vintage marked the end of an unusually long drought. Rains drenched our hill and set the stage for a vibrant and verdant spring. Budbreak repeated an early start to the season, pushing out in late March. Spring warmed the tender buds and brought on a temperate summer. Careful preparation and late summer heat led to an early harvest, and we were fortunate to have all of our fruit in before the fires began. The result of this tumultuous season is some of the best wine we have ever made.”

The 2017 Hexameter is a Bordeaux Blend of 47% Cabernet Franc, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Merlot. It was aged in 60% new French oak.

Winemaker Notes - “The 2017 Hexameter exudes enfolding aromas of rhubarb, blueberry, black cherry, baking spice, Jordan almond and sage. Vibrancy and freshness complement the resonant and undeniably delicious power of this incredible vintage. Austin Peterson, Winemaker

Château Léoville Poyferré St-Julien Bordeau 2009

Ryan also brought this iconic 100 point St Julien, Bordeaux, from the classic 2009 vintage from his cellar. This is one of our favorite producers from one of our favorites appellations. We toured the Chateau estate and vineyards during our St Julian Bordeaux Wine Experience in 2019.

This classic release was rated 100 points by Jeb Dunnuck and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 97 points by Jane Anson, James Suckling and Vinous, and 96 points and ‘Cellar Selection‘ by Wine Enthusiast, and 93 points by Wine Spectator.

Jeb Dunnuck says this is “The greatest wine I’ve ever tasted from this address is the 2009 Léoville Poyferré, which is a step up over both the 2000 and the 2010.”

Wine Advocate calls it “One of the more flamboyant and sumptuous wines of the vintage.”

Vinous calls “The 2009 Léoville-Poyferré (is) a total pleasure bomb. It is classic 2009.”

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and the balance Cabernet Franc.

Saturated inky purple color, full bodied, super concentrated, deep, and opulent, yet still pure, fresh, elegant and lively, complex, blueberries, blackberries and some blackcurrant fruits, with notes of crème de cassis, graphite lead pencil, exotic spices, cigar box, black tea and black olives, turning to sweet silky smooth fine-grained tannins on the lingering finish.

Castillo Banfi Sammus Super Tuscan 2019

As mentioned above, dear family friend Jared Gelband dropped in and brought this premium Super Tuscan. We’ve written often in these pages about Jared in his role as wine director at Italian Village Restaurant in Chicago. We’ve featured many special dinners at Chicago’s oldest continuously operated family Italian Restaurant many times in these pages, where Jared’s manages the sensational ten thousand bottle Wine Spectator Award winning wine cellar.

This is from prolific Italian producer Costello Banfi, founded 1919 in New York City and continues to be solely owned by the Mariani family. The portfolio’s jewel is the award-winning Castello Banfi vineyard estate in Montalcino, Tuscany, acquired in1978, is a property of 7,100 acres. Additionally, the Mariani family also owns US Pacific Northwest based Pacific Rim & Company with projects from premiere AVAs across Washington state, Willamette Valley, Oregon and Sonoma County, CA.

Their extensive holdings also include the Castello Banfi Il Borgo luxury hotel with Michelin star rated Sala dei Grappoli, a classic taverna, enoteca, private glass museum, balsamic cellars, winery tours, and critically acclaimed, luxury boutique hotel “Il Borgo,” a Relais and Chateaux property.

This premium label, ‘Summus’ is ‘Latin for "highest." is a wine of towering elegance’.

This Super Tuscan is a Sangiovese based blend with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

Producer notes - The fruit and structure of the Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon are enhanced by the elegance and bouquet of the Syrah. The 3 varieties are vinified separately. After alcoholic fermentation, the individual wines are transferred to French oak barriques and aged separately for 12-14 months. They are then blended and aged in wood for 10-12 months. Bottle aging follows for 6 months.

Winemaker Notes - “The Castello Banfi Summus boasts a deep ruby color with aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and hints of vanilla and spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied with a rich, velvety texture and flavors of dark fruit, leather, and a touch of smokiness.”

This was rated 92 points by James Suckling, and 91points by Wine Spectator.

Dark garnet colored medium to full bodied, smooth, soft and polished for easy drinking, dark black currant fruit with notes of dark mocha chocolate, herbs, spice, black tea, and leather with hints of licorice and loam, with silky velvety tannins on the finish.

Rain check …. For next time … I had pulled these from the cellar, prepared to serve them this day, but, with the other spectacular wines brought by others, we didn’t get to them and will return them to the cellar for another day.

Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Westside Road Neighbors 2020

This was another Pinot Noir with legacy influence of winemaker Rob Cabral, like the Summer Dreams that we tasted, above. From the Wine Spectator Top Ten for this year, they write this, “Williams Selyem is a beloved Pinot Noir label for American wine lovers. That’s thanks in large part to Jeff Mangahas, who has been head winemaker since 2014. Succeeding winemaker Bob Cabral and the brand’s original founders, he’s kept the house style intact—one that emphasizes vivid and ripe fruit balanced by underlying juiciness. For the Eastside Road Neighbors bottling, grapes are sourced from the Calegari, Foss and Lewis MacGregor Estate vineyards. The 2023 vintage is a mic drop year for California Pinot, a consistently cool growing season that led to a late harvest. Mangahas hit the mark, earning this Russian River Valley bottling a rare back-to-back appearance in our Top 10.

I had pulled another Pinot Noir, a single vineyard designated label, sharing son Ryan’s name, from one of our favorites storied Pinot producers.

Calera Mt Hollister Ryan Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011, as featured in these pages in this earlier blogpost - https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2025/02/calera-mt-hollister-ryan-vineyard-pinot.html

And, a gala family dinner is not complete without pulling some birthyear vintage wines. I pulled these two dessert wines, for sons’ Ryan’s and Sean’s birthyears. Regrettably, we got so caught up in the dinner and fellowship, we didn’t get to these either.

And lastly, for pairing with Turkey, for the true, uniquely American Holiday, a bottle of the arguably, most American varietal wine, from a classic crowd pleaser Napa Valley producer - Caymus Napa Valley Zinfandel!

Beau Vigne “Persuasion” Chardonnay with Chicken Ciaccatore

Beau Vigne “Persuasion” Chardonnay with Chicken Ciaccatore

We just received our club shipment of “Persuasion” Chardonnay from Napa Valley producer Beau Vigne. Eager to try this new label, Linda prepared Chicken Ciaccatore for dinner for a food wine pairing.

This proved to be a good pairing of the bold expressive Chardonnay with the Herbes de Provence, oregano and rosemary spices with tomatoes, mushrooms and wild rice of the chicken dish.

We have featured in these pages several Beau Vigne big reds from this emerging, interesting Napa producer, who produces a wide portfolio of wines from estate and contract growers, and purchased lot sources. This is our first introduction to a white, in this just released Napa Valley Chardonnay.

I wrote about and featured this producer in earlier blogposts, such as this one, Beau Vigne Napa Valley Red Blend 2013, excerpted here:

If the pedigree of the winemaker says anything, then Beau Vigne is in a distinguished class with 100-point winemaker Julien Fayard (Lafite Rothschild, Smith Haut Lafitte, Melka, Quintessa, Realm, Covert Estate), and where Dave Phinney was the founding winemaker! Note also, the collaboration with Philippe Melka, and contribution of another of our fav’s, winemaker Kirk Venge.

I featured Beau Vigne in detail in a more extensive blogpost last summer - Beau Vigne Napa Valley Proprietary Red, and several other blogposts such as the one’s below.

The producer writes - “Our Napa Valley winery is devoted exclusively to making influential luxury Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon Blends. Taking inspiration from our founding winemaker Dave Phinney who sought out to make red wines that would compete with the greatest wines of the world. This tradition was enhanced by the addition of winemaker Kirk Venge in 2008 through 2018/19 who obtained a perfect 100 Points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Present-day winemaking is now in the hands of Julien Fayard who hails from the legendary first growth Château Lafite-Rothschild and Atelier Melka before becoming the brilliant up and coming new winemaker in Napa Valley.”

Beau Vigne was taken over by Charles Bartlett when he purchased the brand in 2019 with the intent to carry on the dream created by Ed and Trish Snider, whom he has known for many years. Charles has worked in Napa since the late 1970s and has built a successful wine trading company, working with many of the top names in the mountain AVAs.

Bartlett hired Julien Fayard to establish and oversee modern practices in the vineyard and in the cellar. The release of beau Vigne CULT Cabernet Sauvignon, beacme one of Napa Valley’s most acclaimed labels with year-over-year 93 to 98 points from critics. Beau Vigne continues the tradition of hand-harvested grapes planted and grown on Atlas Peak, the Pritchard Hill region and other viticultural areas of Napa Valley including Howell Mountain, Oakville and Rutherford.

We featured other tastings from the Beau Vigne portfolio in these other earlier blogposts:

https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2022/10/beau-vigne-proprietary-red-byob-at.html

This producer first caught my attention when buddy Bob brought it to our Pour Boys OTBN - "Open-That-Bottle-Night" 2022 in Charleston and I pegged it as WOTN - Wine of the Night, my personal favorite. Bob picked up the bottle at his local Total Wine beverage superstore in Boca Raton Town Center. I saw the label when there and also at the new Total Wine in Indy.

Beau Vigne (pronounced bo-veenya), was founded by Ed and Trish Snider with their first vintage release in 2002. Translated from French it means beautiful vineyard in French.

Ed’s family had a long history in Napa Valley dating back to his Swiss Italian grandfather Martin Garzoli who arrived in Napa in 1913. He grew up on a ranch in Carneros and worked on farms in Napa and Sonoma. Martin made his own wines at home in the evenings. His son John Garzoli played for the San Francisco 49ers in 1955 and went on to coach football at St. Helena High School in the center of Napa Valley where children of many vintners attended school. A number of Ed’s former students are now in the wine industry.

In 2018, they sold Beau Vigne to Don Dady and Jason Kyle from Arizona. Jason was a former NFL football player, a long snapper for five different teams including the San Francisco 49ers. In addition to his wine interests, Jason is co-owner of Press Coffee Roasters with locations in Arizona.  Partner Dady is co-founder of Annexus, a financial company in Scottsdale and also owns Seven Apart Winery in Napa Valley just north of the city of Napa.

Beau Vigne sourced fruit for their estate wines from their 10 acre Stags Ridge Vineyard at the top of Soda Canyon Road on the slopes of Atlas Peak at about 1650 feet elevation. The site was planted to 8 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and an acre each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Ed sold the vineyard and it is now a part of Seven Apart Winery’s estate. Beau Vigne continues to source grapes from there and other premium vineyards in Napa Valley.

Since 2019, Beau Vigne has partnered with Appellation Trading Company to distribute Beau Vigne as part of their portfolio of brands.

Over the years, Beau Vigne has been crafted by several highly regarded Napa Valley winemakers. Their founding winemaker was Dave Phinney who went on to develop several successful brands, most notably, Orin Swift Cellars and the Prisoner portfolio of wines. One of our favorite winemakers, Kirk Venge of Venge Vineyards has also crafted Beau Vigne wines. Today the winemaker is Julien Fayard.

Originally from France, Julien began his career as a winemaker producing quality rosé at his family’s winery in Provence. He worked at legendary Chateaux Lafite Rothschild and Smith Haut Laffite in Bordeaux before relocating to Napa Valley where he was Philippe Melka’s director of winemaking for a few years before setting out on his own.

Julien earned his Master in Agri-Business from ESA France and his Master in Winemaking from Toulouse France. In 2011, he received his MBA from UC Davis.
Recently, Beau Vigne became part of a select collection of vintners represented at Vintner’s Collective, the city of Napa’s oldest collective tasting room. They showcase wines from an elite group of premier Napa Valley producers who do not have their own tasting rooms. Select bottlings and vintages of Beau Vigne are available for tasting and purchase there.

Beau Vigne bottles wines under three different brands; the Legacy Series, the Signature Series and the Discovery Series. This new release is from their “new expressions”  Discovery Series.

Winemaker’s Notes - “Beautiful aromas of golden apple, with hints of lemon and a touch of jasmine. As the wine opens up it shows great characteristics of toasted brioche that will linger. The wine is vibrant with a lot of tropical aromas and a bright acidity.”

This was golden straw colored, medium bodied, bright expressive and bold flavors of apple and tropical fruits with unique accents of what the producer describes as jasmine and toasted brioche, with bright acidity on the crisp finish.

This unique flavor profile is an ‘acquired taste’, different from a traditional Chardonnay, but a nice fitting complement to the moderate herbal spices and mushrooms of the dish entree shown above.

Fantesca celebrates newest grand-daughter arrival

Fantesca fantasy label celebrates newest grand-daughter arrival - family fun with Fantesca continues …

A quiet celebration at home for the arrival of our newest grand-daughter, and her courageous mom, we opened this whimsical label that celebrates a legendary harlequin. Seeking a Cabernet to enjoy paired with a selection of artisan cheeses and pate’, we pulled from the cellar an aged vintage bottle from one of favorite producers, Napa Valley Spring Mountain District, Fantesca

(Of course, readers of these pages saw our gala family celebration dinner several weeks ago revealing the name and anticipating Ryleigh’s arrival, featured in this post - Family Celebration Dinner at Mesón Sabika Naperville.)

The name of the winery comes from a character in the Italian comedy troupe that inspired Cirque Du Soleil. La Fantesca was the single female character in the early theatrical performances of Commedia dell’Arte. Both the lover and the equal of the protagonist, Harlequin, Fantesca could always be counted on to charm the audience. Owners, Duane and Susan Hoff write that "when we heard Fantesca described as ”Sexy, Smart, and Unpretentious,” we knew we had found a name worth living up to."'

We hold nearly two dozen vintages of this producer, one of our favorites, in our cellar holdings.

We have been fans of Fantesca since the estate was taken over and the brand was established by Duane and Susan Hoff back with the 2004 vintage release. We hosted new owner/producer Duane Hoff at our home on one of his first release tours when he was traveling the country building the Fantesca brand, then enjoyed visiting the magnificent estate Chateau several times for tastings and tours, as chronicled in these pages in these blogposts:

We tasted and acquired early releases of this label during our visits to the Fantesca Estate on Spring Mountain in Napa Valley. Following meeting and hosting producer Duane Hoff here in Chicago in 2006, we visited the Fantesca Estate & Winery during our Napa Valley Spring Mountain Experience in the autumn of 2009, and earlier during our Napa Wine Experience 2007, and again in 2011.

Initially, the early year 2002-2007 vintages from the estate were crafted and managed by winemakers Nils and Kirk Venge - some of our favorite winemakers and producers of a broad collection of wine holdings in our cellar.

Then in 2008, Fantesca teamed up with legendary winemaker Heidi Barrett. The celebrated winemaker has been referred to as “The Wine Diva of Napa” and as “The First Lady of Wine.” She gained fame and recognition producing exceptional high quality wines that she produced for famous labels.

They then went on to bring on Master Sommelier DLynn Proctor as wine ambassador and evangelist. I met DLynn when he hosted a Penfolds Tasting that featured Legendary Grange at our local Binny's back in 2014, when he was Penfold's Ambassador and Education Director for that icnonic Australian producer. (Grange is one of the signature wines we hold for our son Alec, his birthyear vintage being named #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator).

What fun to meet DLynn in person, having enjoyed watching his pursuit of his Master Sommelier Certification in the entertaining documentary movie SOMM which is a feature on Netflix. We enjoyed seeing DLynn on the Amazon Prime Somm III documentary prominently wearing his Fantesca jacket.

We’ve had fun with and featured Fantesca labels in many special and family centric dinners such as this  Wine Dinner Featuring Spring Mountain Wines.

That tasting introduced the inaugural release of a new Fantesca label series inspired by the words of Winston Churchill:  “‘All great things’ are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.”

Each vintage release of the Fantesca “All Great Things” label commemorates one of those notable words from the legendary Churchill quote - freedom (2015), justice (2016), honor (2011, 2017), duty (2012, 2018), mercy (2013), and hope (2014) - this one christened the (first) "Honor" release.

Fantesca wines have anchored several momentous dinners to follow, featured in these pages’ blogposts - Family Holiday Gathering brings out flight of varied reds, and Father Son World Cup wine tasting and  Family Christmas Celebration and Wine Dinner.

Fantesca wines have also anchored many of our Pour Boys wine groups dinners such as this one -  Sea Smoke Gratis, King Richards, Del Dotto Highlight Beef Tenderloin Dinner; And this one - Pour Boys EM Team Hemmingway’s Dinner.

We featured and wrote about the “All Great Things” label and branding in earlier blogposts in these pages back in April, 2023 - Family birthday dinner at Son Ryan's features a flight of big red wines

This was served by son Ryan at grand-daughter MacKenzie's birthday, when Ryan and D-inlaw Michelle hosted a gala family celebration dinner.
At that dinner Ryan served from his cellar several vintage premium wines including this interesting label from Fantesca. “All Great Things”, Freedom 2009.

Tonight, We pulled this bottle from a mixed OWC - Original Wood Case of a mini vertical collection of 2005-06 and ‘07 vintages, selecting the oldest twenty year old 2005 release for enjoying, tasting/pairing. The ultra-premium packaging features oversized etched glass bottles with painted branding identifiers.

Linda prepared toast points from three different breads, served with two different preserves, Raspberry and Shiraz Blackberry, along with pate’ and olives, and a selection of artisan cheeses - Brie, Swiss, Gouda and English Stilton Blue,

Always the creative and innovative marketers, Fantesca have fun with their ‘fortune-corkie’ program, featuring notable quotes on the corks, submitted by Fantesca fans. Winners whose quotes are selected are rewarded with magnums of Fantesca wines.

What fun that tonight, opening Fantesca to celebrate the women in our family, and most notably the arrival of grand-daughter Ryleigh, the fortune cookie whimsically quips about women - from comedian George Carlin!

We last opened this label BYOB for an anniversary dinner at one of our favorite eateries - Chez Joel French Bistro in Chicago - featured in this post - https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2016/08/fantesca-spring-mtn-napa-cab-for.html.

Fantesca Spring Mtn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

At twenty years of age, the importantly fill level and cork (shown above) were still pristine. This is drinking at the apex of its drinking profile and still has life yet at this level - no need to hurry to consume remaining bottles in the cellar.

Tonight’s tasting was similar to that BYOB Chez Joel dinner on the patio … The Fantesca was wonderful, a perfect selection for our intimate occasion, and a perfect complement to the Pate plate and then my New York Strip Steak with roquefort, as well as Linda's Salmon and asparagus entree.

Dark garnet colored, medium-full bodied, a mouthful of sweet red currant, spicy cinnamon, black cherry, black berry, cedar and lively acid with a long sweet spicy oak finish held together by finely integrated firm tannins.

Interestingly as I write an earlier blogpost, I had pulled and compared my tasting notes to an earlier review of this wine when I wrote' "Over a eleven hundred different wines in the cellar and I chose this one for our intimate anniversary dinner ...."

RM 93 points.
