Wine Medley with Pasta Shrimp Tenderloin in vodka cream sauce

Diverse flight of wines with Linguini Pasta, Shrimp and Ground Tenderloin in vodka cream sauce

Following our gala neighborhood social end of summer celebration gathering, Linda prepared a delicious Linguini Pasta with Shrimp and Ground Tenderloin in a vodka cream sauce

We opened the medley of wines remaining from the labels served the previous evening.

The remaining wines from the wine flight included:

  • Gérard Bertrand Languedoc Hampton Water Rose’ Blend 2023
  • JC Wickens Swerwer Chenin Blanc 2018
  • Stolpman Ballard Canyon, Santa Barbara County Rousanne 2019
  • Madame de Beaucaillou Haut-Médoc 2018
  • Spring Valley Vineyards ‘Katherine Corkrum’ Walla Walla Cabernet Franc 2015

Each of these wines were featured in detail in these pages in the blogpost - End of summer neighborhood social - small plates and assorted wines.

The shrimp, beef tenderloin, and pasta with the robust, vibrant tangy vodka cream sauce paired well with the whites, the Rose’ and the Reds, offering a fun food and wine pairing tasting opportunity. It was great fun sampling and comparing the pairing of the different wines with the meal.

Robert Craig Affinity Duo with Grilled Beefsteaks

Robert Craig Affinity Duo Mini-Vertical with Grilled Beefsteaks

We were invited to son Alec’s and D-in-law Vivianna’s for midweek dinner of grilled beefsteaks, roasted potatoes and grilled onions - a chance to enjoy family including our grand-daughters.

Prior to dinner, we enjoyed some artisan cheeses with crackers and fresh grapes, and Linda brought a mixed green Ceasar salad.

For pairing with the grilled beefsteaks, I pulled and brought from our home cellar an aged vintage Red Blend - Robert Craig Affinity Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2007.

This label is the Bordeaux varietal blend from Robert Craig. We have a long history with this producer and their numerous Napa Valley Cabernets dating back to their inaugural release in 1993, and they represent one of the largest and longest holdings in our wine cellar collection.

Notably, Alec had just received a recent release of this same label which allowed the opportunity to do a mini-vertical comparison tasting of the 2007 and 2022 releases. He shared, and I took home a bottle of this release extending my vertical collection to nearly two dozen vintages.

We first tasted the 2007 vintage of this wine from a barrel sample, and acquired this label release during the Robert Craig Harvest Party, at the Winery and Vineyards estate high atop Howell Mountain back in 2009 as featured in this blogpost - Robert Craig Howell Mountain Harvest Party 2009

Linda, Robert and me
With Bill and Beth C and Rachel,
Robert Craig Hospitality Ambassador

I’ve written about Robert Craig and their Cabernet Sauvignon portfolio and this label numerous times in these pages, which are excerpted here - as last featured March 2, 2025 - Robert Craig Affinity Napa Cabernet 2007, and previously January 25, 2022 Robert Craig Affinity 2007.

We hold more than two decades of this label dating back to the inaugural release in 1993. This is part of a case we acquired of this label at the release party at the winery high atop Howell Mountain, so it is one we know well.

I have written about Robert Craig Affinity Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon in these pages many times including this detailed blogpost back in 2019, and again in 2021 in this post - Tomahawk Rib-eye Dinner features Robert Craig Affinity Duo, both partially excerpted below.

Robert Craig is one of our favorite Napa Valley producers and represents one of our largest holdings in our cellar. We've held many wine dinners with Robert and Lynn Craig and attended many events at the estate and winery. We have many fond memories of those dinners, lunches and other tasting events, and hearing Robert talk about this label.

We visited Robert Craig's site high atop Howell Mountain several times, as shown here with wine buddy Andy, sister Jan and bro-in-law Bill, and wine buddy Bill and Beth C. One of our memorable trips featured a picnic lunch at the site overlooking the valley below shown below. It was during that trip that Bill discovered and subsequently sourced Howell Mountain Cabernet, Affinity and Robert Craig Zinfandel which they served at daughter Krista's wedding.

With Robert Craig at the estate high atop Howell Mtn
back in 2008.

As mentioned above, we hold as many as two decades of Robert Craig’s portfolio of labels’ vintages dating back to the inaugural vintage release in 1993. This label, Affinity, represents the Robert Craig Cabernet Sauvignon based blend of Cabernet Sauvignons and other Bordeaux varietals sourced from the various Napa Valley appellations.

Robert Craig flight of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons
Affinity is the Bordeaux Blend of the Robert Craig portfolio such that Robert always took immense pride in this label, as the entry level introduction to his 'three mountains and a valley' appellation select Napa Cabernets, referring to his appellation designated premium labels from Mt Veeder, Howell Mtn and Spring Mountain. There were also bottlings from Atlas Peak and Mt George and in later years he would say ‘five mountains and a valley’. He took pride in this providing early gratification quality drinking at an early age, yet as shown tonight, it has some longevity for aging for a decade or more.

I recall many times, Robert speaking fondly of this label and the QPR - quality price ratio it provided, as he strived to hold the price point of this wine to provide excellent value and be a draw to the Robert Craig brand. The appellation designated labels sold for twenty to thirty percent more. I wrote recently about the discontinuation of the Mt Veeder label after two decades of being one of the flagship labels. This was especially poignant as this was Robert's favorite label of the portfolio, having started his career on Mt Veeder.

Sadly, Robert passed away in 2019 and I wrote about him in a Tribute Blog at that time. I opened a 2007 vintage of his favorite label, Robert Craig Mt Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon that evening.

https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2019/09/robert-craig-tribute.html

I wrote back in 2019 about Robert's passing in a Tribute to Robert Craig, when the business turned over to new leadership.

Robert never promoted or played up the fact this label was a carefully crafted  Bordeaux Blend comprising all the Bordeaux varietals, rather he focused on it as an introduction to the portfolio of Robert Craig Napa Valley Cabernets.

Robert Craig "Affinity" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend 2007

This release was awarded 96 points by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and 92 points Wine Enthusiast.

As noted above, we first tasted this wine from a barrel sample and acquired this release during the Robert Craig Howell Mountain Harvest Party '09 back in 2009.

Robert Parker wrote in 2009, "Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the next 15 or possibly 20 years. This is the best group of wines I have ever tasted from Robert Craig Winery. Not only is there not a single disappointment in this portfolio, but these are all noteworthy wines, with thrilling levels of quality. Moreover, they are moderately priced for Napa Valley as well as ageworthy. I think these are the finest wines that I have ever tasted from Robert Craig Cellars."

Wine Enthusiast wrote of this release, 'Craig has produced his best bottling since the late 1990s'.

This year’s blend is heavier on the petit verdot, with a composition of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 8% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec.

Back in 2022 I wrote, “this exceeded my expectations for this label and indeed was one of the best drinking Affinity's in memory. At fifteen years, this seems to reaching the apex of its drinking profile. Tonight, this 2007 release was as good as any Affinity I recall ever having - a perfect accompaniment to the grilled tenderloin beefsteaks. At eighteen years this was at the apex of its drinking window, not likely to improve further with aging, but available for pleasant drinking for several years yet to come.”

Robert Craig "Affinity" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend 2007 vs 2022

Tonight, at eighteen years, the label, foil and most importantly, the cork and fill level of the 2007 were pristine, ideal for the age. However, the 2007 was starting to show its age, most notably in the color, which has started to take on a slight hazy brownish rust hue, when compared to the bright garnet color of the recent release (as shown 2022 on left, 2007 on right).

Furthermore, while the two vintages showed amazing similarity in the overall tasting profile, the 2007 was starting to take on notes of dusty, earthy leather. The 2007 showed more depth, weight and concentration than the lighter and slightly more austere 2022.

Historic notes for the 2007 release - Dark garnet colored, medium full bodied, elegant, polished and smoothly balanced, black berry and black currant fruits with notes of mocha chocolate and spice, hints of cassis, smoke and cedar with smooth silky tannins on a lingering cloying finish.

Tonight, based on these tasting results, I reduced my rating from RM 93 points to RM 91 points.

I rate the 2022 release at 90 points.

Historic past reviews of this 2007 Affinity label ….

We bought a case of this upon release and still hold most of it of this label from this vintage - one of a dozen vintages we hold dating back two decades, all totaling more than four cases. I've blogged tasting notes of this label numerous times with similar results, five of which are summarized below:

My Cellartracker record for this label shows a half dozen tasting notes for this release going back from 21 to 2010 as shown below.

As posted: 4/8/2021 - This exceeded my expectations for this label and indeed was one of the best drinking Affinity's in memory. Mini-vertical tasting alongside 2000. Dark garnet colored, medium full bodied, elegant, polished and smoothly balanced, black berry and black currant fruits with notes of mocha chocolate and spice, hints of cassis, smoke and cedar with smooth silky tannins on a lingering cloying finish. 93 Points

6/28/2020 - Consistent with earlier tasting notes.

https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2020/06/robert-craig-affinity-napa-valley.html

2/10/2019 - Earlier tastings of this label cited this release being "a bit tight and slightly closed on opening, but after an hour opened up to show wonderful black and blue berry fruits".  92 Points

This week this was more approachable on opening and even appealing in the couple of following days, better than when young. It showed the same profile as earlier, garnet colored, medium full bodied, complex black berry and black currant fruits with slight hint of mocha - nicely balanced and polished with velvety well integrated smooth silky tannins on a nice lingering soft finish.

Red & White Indy Racer Wines for Beefsteak and Shrimp Dinner

Red & White Wines for Beefsteak and Shrimp Dinner

We were joined for dinner by Sis/in-law Pat and Rodger and friends Steve and Carol-Ann, who used our house as a staging stop-over as they flew out and then back into Chicago O’hare International airport.

Linda prepared beef flank steak and shrimp with rice, roasted potatoes and vegetables.

I pulled from the cellar a special Napa Red and White for pairing with the surf & turf dinner.

Taking into account our guests being from Indianapolis, I opened bottles from Indianapolis 500 Race drivers, legend Mario Andretti and Randy Lewis.

Notably, both wineries have been sold or closed since acquiring these wines.

Andretti Cellars Montona Napa Valley Chardonnay 2015

We discovered this wine and the Montona portfolio/brand when we visited the Andretti Winery and Estate in southeast Napa Valley during our Napa Wine Experience in 2018. I wrote about that visit in a more detailed blogpost earlier, and about the Montona brand and this particular label in another previous blopost.

This label is from the Montona Reserve brand, the high end premium line of the Andretti portfolio. The line is named for the village of Montona, the hometown of the Andretti family and birthplace of the legend racer turned wine producer.

Mario’s birthplace, Montona d’Istria, Italy, is now called Motovun and is in Croatia; at the time of his birth in 1940, it was part of Italy but it was annexed by the former Yugoslavia after World War II.

Mario is not the only Napa ‘vintner’ with the distinction of being born in what is now Croatia – legendary winemaker Mike Grgich was also born in Croatia in the small village of Desne.

Mario fell in love with wine through numerous trips around the world as a result of his racing career; he would seek out the finest wines in various regions and wine became a part of his lifestyle.

Andretti Winery was established in 1996 by the famed race car driver, Mario Andretti in a joint venture project with Joe Antonini, former CEO of Kmart, who was one of Mario’s sponsors during his racing days.

Andretti and Antonini purchased land along Big Ranch Road in Napa Valley’s Oak Knoll District (a short drive north of the city of Napa). In 2001 they sold the property to Laird Family Winery and agreed a 20-year operational lease for the Andretti Winery and hospitality space. That lease expired in March 2021 at which point Andretti Winery closed its doors and no longer sees visitors at that winery location. For the next couple years Andretti Winery hosted visitors by either walk-in or appointment at Feast it Forward tasting room in downtown Napa but those tastings are no longer being offered.

Andretti continues to lease about 42 acres of vineyards surrounding the winery, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. They also purchase grapes from other vineyards in select locations in Napa Valley.

Several brands were produced under the Andretti label including their Napa Valley Series (wines that are not vineyard designates), the Villa Andretti Series (reasonably priced limited production wines that focus on Italian varieties from grapes typically not growing in Napa Valley) and the Montona Series is named after Mario’s childhood home in Italy and features their most premium limited production wines with a number of bottlings limited to just 50 cases.

Each vintage, Andretti Winemaker Bob Pepi selected from the finest fruit to create wines for the limited production Montona series of labels - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, a Super Tuscan and this Chardonnay. Produced was very limited to as few as fifty cases each and allocated available directly from the producer, to Andretti Winery Wine Club Members. We procured our allocation through our membership in the Wine Club.

Photos of the former Andretti Winery estate, a small faux Italian/Tuscan building and courtyard with picturesque fountains and landscaping. There was a small cottage, patios and lawns that are available for small private tastings and picturesque grounds which would be ideal for a private event or special outing.

Andretti Montona Reserve Napa Valley Chardonnay 2015

The Andretti Winery Montona Napa Valley Chardonnay went through full malolactic fermentation and was aged 16 months in 30% new French oak barrels. This is our last bottle of our limited holdings.

As noted above, this label is not Estate bottled, meaning the grapes for the juice in the bottles are not necessarily grown on the property, but rather, may have been purchased from contract growers. As such, the (rear) label cites the wine is merely "Bottled by Andretti Winery".

Hence, with all due respect to the legendary Indy Racecar driver, Mario Anrdretti, and his benefactor investor partner in the winery venture, former CEO of K-Mart Joe Antonini, they are tenant wine producers, not landowners or winery estate owners.

As a wine collector and onephile, I would prefer to support family owned farmer/grower winemakers who produce wines from grapes produced on their properties. This provides a consistent source of fruit year after year and thereby allows for the focus on terroir and its impact on the wine from vintage to vintage, as a basis for comparison over the years, and as a comparison against other similarly situated terroir focused wines.

Winemaker notes - “Our Montona Chardonnay exudes complex aromas of fresh stone fruit, Meyer lemon and floral notes complemented by subtle oak overtones of almond and crème brulee. On the palate, the wine is exploding with flavors of pear, toasted almond and spiced apple. Minimal new oak allows the wine to retain its natural fruit characteristics and varietal focus.”

This is not an oaky or buttery profile wine. It is butter to medium golden in color, medium bodied, moderately rich and concentrated pear, peach and stone fruits with notes of floral, jasmine and citrus with toasted oak spices on the lingering finish.

RM 90 points.

We then opened this big red wine from another Indy Race Car Driver, Randy Lewis, whose winery ironically was across the road from the (former) Andretti Winery Estate.

Lewis Cellars Alec’s Blend 2015

We wrote about our private Lewis Cellars Napa Chateau Visit and Tasting in an earlier blogpost, excerpted here. Our visit to the Chateau of Lewis Cellars winery was one of the highlights of our Pour Boys 2017 Napa Wine Experience

I've often written in these pages about the fun we have with this branding, with its signature 'L' on the label, ala Laverne and Shirley, or wife Linda, or her mother Lucy, or our daughter Erin Leigh, or her daughter, our first grandchild/daughter Lucy!

That coupled with the Hoosier heritage of Randy Lewis, Indy 500 race driver from our native Indiana, and, their affinity to family, naming labels after their grandkids - Alec, Ethan and Mason, we adopted Alec's Blend as a signature label for son Alec and feature it at family celebrations.

Lewis wines are family favorites for such special occasions, punctuated by this namesake Blend for son Alec. Lewis Cabernets are some of our favorites and we have a decade long vertical of Alec's as well as their Cabernets, dating back to this '97.

This blend is dedicated to Randy and Debbie Lewis' first grandson, Alec, who was born on the day of the harvest of the grapes for this wine leading to the name. I learned at our tasting that this is the inaugural vintage of this label/blend of which we still hold two bottles, and every vintage bottle since.

At the time of the writing of this blogpost, the blog search shows twelve postings of Lewis wines (Lewis Cellars (12)). Scrolling through those tastings are posts tied to many memorable family and friend wine tastings and dinners.

So it was that we have some experience with Lewis wines going back two decades.

Like Andretti, Lewis didn’t own their own vineyards, they have long term contracts with many grower sources, some for terms as long as thirty years. We collect and drink some other wines similarly situated such as Freemark Abbey and their long term affiliation with the Bosche' vineyard, source for their vineyard designated select Cabernet which we own going back to the '92 vintage.

Lewis sourced the finest fruit from Calistoga, St. Helena, Rutherford and Oak Knoll for our their varietals. Chardonnay comes from Oak Knoll and Russian River Valley. Each site was selected for a specific varietal character, with many of the vineyards being planted exclusively for them.

Notably, Lewis Cellars was acquired in 2021 by Paso Robles-based Justin Vineyards and Winery, which is owned by the company behind Fiji Water.

Ridge Pagani Ranch Zinfandel with BBQ Ribs

Ridge Pagani Ranch Sonoma Valley Zinfandel Red Blend 2017 with BBQ Ribs

Friday night finds us babysitting for kids/grandkids for the evening. Linda prepared BBQ ribs with baked potatoes and sweet potatoes to take for dinner. I pulled from the cellar a Big Red Blend for an ideal accompaniment.

This is from Ridge Vineyards known for single-vineyard designated labels sourced from exceptional vineyards across Northern California with distinctive terroir - climate, soil, and ideally matched varietals.

I wrote about Ridge Vineyards and other single vineyard designated releases including Zinfandels often in these pages such as these blogposts - Ridge Vineyards "Lytton Springs" Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel 2014, and, Ridge Lytton Springs at Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Naperville, and Ridge Lytton Springs Zinfandel Red Blend 2012.

Ridge Vineyards produce a broad portfolio of single vineyard designated Zinfandel labels. They are also known for their ultra-premium flagship Monte Bello red blend produced from their estate vineyard of the same name, first released in 1962. Two years later they released their first Zinfandel label.

Ridge Vineyards Pagani Ranch Sonoma Valley Zinfandel Red Blend 2017

This Zinfandel based blend is made from the Pagani vineyard on the western side of Sonoma Valley. The majority of the vineyard was planted ninety to one hundred and twenty years ago; portions of it were replanted between 2013—2018. Ridge first released this label in 1991.

The vineyard has been continuously tended by a quality-conscious family for four generations having been planted by Felice Pagani who began planting vines in Sonoma Valley in the late 1890s.

The site was maintained and therefore survived the thirteen years of Prohibition, and the Great Depression indicating proof of its merit.

Today, the site is tended by fourth-generation family members planted to Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, and Mataro, in addition to the main varietal, Zinfandel.

This release is a unique blend of 84% Zinfandel, 7% Petite Sirah, 7% Alicante Bouschet, and 2% Mataro.

In my last blogpost I wrote about the Aglianico Italian grape varietal and I wondered if there was any connection with this Alicante Bouschet varietal. There is not, but it opens the door for the exploration here of another historic and previously unknown grape.

Alicante Bouschet is a red grape with red flesh and red pulp that is a cross of Petit Bouschet and Grenache grape varietals. It was developed by French Viticulturalist Henri Bouschet in 1866. The Petit Bouschet grape was created by his father Louis Bouschet who gave it his name.

The resulting grape had high quality concentrated fruit with deep dense color, produced high yields, ripened early and was easy to grow and maintain. Its deep colour made it useful for blending to enhance light French table wines and to extend American wines.

Alicante Bouschet delivered rich, concentrated dark fruit flavors of ripe blackberry, black cherry, and blackcurrant with notes of pepper and fresh tobacco.

It was planted heavily during Prohibition in California as the intense red color was useful for stretching wine and was capable for export to the East Coast. The grape's thick skin allowed it to survive the long railway transportation from California to New York City which had an auction where the grapes were sold.

At the turn of the 21st century, Alicante Bouschet was the 12th most planted red wine grape in France with sizable plantings in Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire Valley the Languedoc, Provence and Cognac regions and Alentejo, Portugal.

The Matero grape is also known as the popular French Mourvèdre and the popular Spanish Monastrell varietals.

This release of Ridge Pagini Ranch Zinfandel was awarded 96 Points by Zinfandel Chronicles, 94 Points by Jeff Cox of Decanter, 94 Points by Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media, Jeb Dunnuck of JebDunnuck.com and Erin Brooks of The Wine Advocate, and 93 Points by James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com and Wilfred Wong of Wine.com.

Winemaker Notes - “Focused jammy blueberry fruit and pepper on the nose. On the palate, fresh cherry, mineral, firm acidity, balanced structure and long lingering finish.”

Dark inky garnet purple color, full bodied, complex, round, ripe plum and brambly blackberry and blueberry fruits, notes of peppercorn, garrigue, smokey cresosote, spice box and leather with hints of mocha turning to sweet grainy tannins on a layered lingering finish.

RM 92 points.

Montevetrano BYOB at Angeli’s Italian

Montevetrano Colli di Salerno IGT BYOB at Angeli’s Italian

We dined outside on the patio at Angel’is Italianour favorite neighborhood trattoria, and I took BYOB from our home cellar this unique limited production vintage aged Italian big red wine.

This was an ideal pairing with my veal piccata and Linda’s eggplant parmagiana .

This is from Montevetrano in the hills of San Cipriano Picentino in Campania, southern Italy, 50 miles southeast of Naples, a dozen miles east of and in the hills above Salerno

Montevetrano started in 1983 as a hobby by Silvia Imparato, who transformed her family property into a winery in the mid-1980’s, with the guidance of acclaimed oenologist Riccardo Cotarella. She is now joined by her daughter Gaia, who oversees the winemaking.

Just south of Mount Vesuvio along the Amalfi Coast in the Monti Picentini Regional Park, the vineyards cover about 12 acres of the 60 acre estate. The vineyards are protected by the Picentini Mountains, which form like a crown around the property.

The region boasts a cool Mediterranean climate with extreme coastal, as well as high elevation mountain terroirs. With the cooler climate in Campania; the region usually sees some of the last harvest dates in Italy. The local terroir is a combination of the mild climate of the coast and nearby mountains, and unique volcanic and sandy soils.

The vineyards are in a former Bourbons’ estate at 100 meters above sea level, on the crest of a hill among oak, chestnut and hazelnut trees, a citrus grove and olive trees, in the shadow of an ancient medieval castle. The boundaries are marked by blackberry bushes and old roses mark the rows of the “Horse vineyard”, near and ancient ‘700 country house.

This Montevetrano Colli di Salerno IGT, is the highly acclaimed flagship blend composed of Bordeaux varietals Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and the local indigenous grape, Aglianico. Aglianico might be considered one of Italy’s three best wine grapes, along with Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. Aglianico “alli-yawn-nico” is found almost exclusively in Southern Italy in the regions of Campania and Basilicata.

Aglianico produces full-bodied red wines, known for strikingly savory flavors of leather, white pepper, black fruits and cured meat that when aged, develop soft dusty aromas of dried figs and sun-tanned leather.

Montevetrano’s first vintage was released in the early 1990s; the initial blend was 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Aglianico, while the current blend is typically around 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico, and 20% Merlot.

Montevetrano is often called the “Sassicaia of the South” due to its role in elevating southern Italian wine to international acclaim, and, its receipt of high scores from critics such as Robert Parker in the mid-1990’s.

Sassicaia is the ultra-premium wine produced in the style of a Left Bank Bordeaux Premier Cru created by Mario Incisa of Tenuta San Guido on the Tyrrhenian coast, after much experimentation with several French grape varieties.

The wine made mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon was a fundamental change to the Tuscan and Piedmont tradition of Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, respectively. The innovative decision to plant this variety at Tenuta San Guido was partly due to the similarity Mario Incisa noted between Tuscan terrain and that of the Graves area in Bordeaux.

His revolutionary winemaking style has became a legendary commercial phenomenon since its first release in 1968. I wrote about and featured Sassicaia in this blogpost - Sassicaia Owner Dinner and Vivere Vertical Tasting with producer co-owner Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta.

Production of Montevetrano Colli di Salerno remains limited, with around 20,000–30,000 bottles per year. The wine is celebrated for its complexity and elegance with rich aroma, dark fruit flavors, and aging potential.

Montevetrano also produce a more approachable white and red under the “Core” designation, which often provide tremendous value.

Besides the Montevetrano Bordeaux and Anglianico Red Blend, they also produce a portfolio of aromatic and fresh reds based on Piedirosso grapes, and whites, made from Coda di Volpe and Falanghina. Both reds and whites go by the name, Lacryma Christi, meaning the "tears of Christ." The white varieties of Falanghina and Biancolella make fresh, flirty, mineral-driven whites, and the red Piedirosso and Sciasinoso vines, which cling to steeply terraced coastlines, make snappy and ripe red wines.

Farther inland, as hills become mountains, the limestone soil of Irpinia supports the whites Fiano di Avellino, Falanghina and Greco di Tufo as well as the most-respected red of the south, Aglianico. Here the best and most age-worthy examples come from Taurasi.

Farther north and inland near the city of Benevento, the Taburno region also produces Aglianico of note—called Aglianico del Taburno—on alluvial soils. While not boasting the same heft as Taurasi, these are also reliable components of any cellar.

Montevetrano "Montevetrano" Colli di Salerno IGT 2009

This is vinified with 100% estate grapes and is bottled at the estate so as to maintain total control of the production cycle. It is aged 14 months in 225 liter new and second usage barriques made of French Nevers and Allier and Troncais oak. It is then matured in bottle for 6 months before release.

Montevetrano has a recognizable signature style, characterized by complexity, like the territory in which it is born with its variety of perfumes and colours. It is a wine with a strong persistence, that benefits from the influence of the sea and a mild climate. Montevetrano guaranties great longevity and can continues to mature in bottles for fifteen or twenty years.

Montevetrano 2009 is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico, and 20% Merlot and spent 12-14 months in French oak, 50% new.

This release was rated 94 points by The Wine Advocate, and 92 points by Wine Spectator, Vinous and Wine Enthusiast.

Winemaker’s notes on this release: “This iconic red blend showcases a deep, dark hue with both brightness and depth. On the nose and palate, it offers soft red fruits layered with earthy complexity—volcanic soil, graphite, and a firm mineral backbone. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Aglianico grown on estate-owned land, it undergoes extended skin maceration, stainless steel fermentation, and 14 months of barrique aging. The result is a structured, expressive wine with refined tannins and a lingering finish.’

“Nice bright and dark color at the same time. It is a dark wine! Soft fruits, but also so much land, this time! Volcanic notes, graphite. It closes, as often, with very good tannins.”

At fifteen years, the 2009 Montevetrano showed little sign of aging, the important fill level and cork being pristine.

Inky black garnet in color, full bodied, concentrated complex rich savory black cherry and black plum fruits with expressive notes of balsamic, rosemary, thyme and exotic spices, leather and pipe tobacco, and hints of smoky creosote and anise with a round tannin lingering finish.

Alec’s Blend for Father’s Day grilled steak dinner

Alec’s Blend for Father’s Day grilled steak dinner

For Father’s Day, I was honored to be part of a foursome for a round of golf with sons Ryan and Alec, and Son-in-law Johnny. Afterwards, Alec came over with his family for grilled beefsteaks, twice baked potatoes and broccoli cheese casserole.

I pulled from the cellar a couple appropriate “Alec” signature wines from our broad collection of labels we hold for his birthyear vintage, or other reasons that associate with him, such as these.

This Alec’s Blend label is from one of our favorite producers, for numerous reasons, none the least of which they have a label named for their grandson who shares our son’s name.

We visited the Napa Valley winery Chateau during our Napa Valley Wine Experience in 2017 - Lewis Cellars Napa Chateau Tasting

Lewis Cellars was also one of the few producers Alec and Viviana were able to visit on their honeymoon getaway to Napa Valley, when the trip was interrupted and cut short by the raging wildfires at that time.

Alec's Blend Napa Valley Red Blend 2014

We enjoy Lewis wines, as I've often written in these pages about the fun we have with this branding, with its signature 'L' on the label, ala Laverne and Shirley, or wife Linda, or her mother Lucy, or our daughter Erin Leigh, or her daughter, our first grandchild/daughter Lucy, and now our recent grandaughters Lavender and Lilac!

That coupled with the Hoosier heritage of Randy Lewis, Indy 500 race driver from our native Indiana, and, their affinity to family, naming labels after their grandkids - Alec, Ethan and Mason, we adopted Alec's Blend as a signature label for son Alec long ago, and feature it often at family celebrations such as tonight.

Lewis wines are family favorites for such special occasions, and this is one of our go-to wines, a 'signature wine' for son Alec, his namesake Blend for Dennis Lewis' son Alec. Lewis Cabernets are some of our favorites and we have a decade long vertical of Alec's as well as their Cabernets, dating back to the inaugural release in '97.

The label is dedicated to Randy and Debbie Lewis' first grandson, Alec, who was born on the day of the harvest of the grapes for this wine leading to the name.

It just so happens, that tonight, we pulled from our cellar the oldest vintage of the nearly dozen vintages we hold of this label, as part of proper cellar inventory management, and its the same vintage we tasted during our visit to the winery.

We already own this wine and hold more than a dozen vintages so we know this label well. This is a unique label - a blend of Syrah and Bordeaux varietals, a rare combination and style that we like very much.

Winemaker notes: With one year of college completed, (Their Alec is a seven years junior to our Alec.) Alec's wine is both boy and man in this boundary-pushing blend of Syrah 50%, Merlot 34% and Cabernet 6%. Asserting his independence through explosively ripe blackberry and huckleberry fruits, there's also kirsch-like cherry cola, spicy oak, supple tannin and a trace of s'mores that closer to home. Tremendously youthful and seriously good fund, Alec's Blend remains a kid at heart.

Dark inky garnet colored, full bodied, concentrated black and blue fruits with notes of cola, spicy oak, hints of caramel and mocha on the chewy tannin finish.

Ermacora Friuli Colli Orientali Rîul Rosso

Ermacora Friuli Colli Orientali Rîul Rosso with pizza

Monday night Gia Mia carry out pizza dinner with Alec, Vivianna and grand-daughters, I took a robust Italian Red Blend for a wine accompaniment that I had set aside in the cooler for such an occasion.

This is from the Friuli Colli Orientali D.O.C. in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia wine region in the northeastern most corner of Italy near the Slovenian border. Friuli-Venezia Giulia is best known for some of Italy’s best and most distinctive white wines. The styles of wines produced in this region of Italy's far north-east corner reflect the merging of cultures where Italian, Germanic and Slavic cultures converge.

Producer supplied vineyards map

Often shortened to just “Friuli,” the area is divided into many distinct subzones, including Friuli Grave, Colli Orientali del Friuli, Collio Goriziano and Carso.

The most northerly subregion of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the Colli Orientali del Friuli (graciously referred to as COF) is also the largest wine producer of the three important DOC zones and ten subregions in Friuli, with 135 producers crafting nearly 2500 different wines.

The flat valley of Friuli Grave is responsible for a large proportion of the region’s wine production, particularly the approachable Pinot Grigio and the popular Prosecco. The best vineyard locations are primarily on the hillsides, as in Colli Orientali del Friuli or Collio. In general, Friuli boasts an ideal climate for viticulture, with warm sunny days and chilly nights, which allow grapes to ripen slowly and evenly.

Many varieties of wine grapes are grown in the Friuli Colli Orientali D.O.C., best known for great whites, but the area also grows and produces red wine varieties, which include the noble Bordeaux classics such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, but also includes numerous local varietals as well.

We featured another wine from the Venezia Giulia Appellation recently as part of the Sepia Curated Wine Pairing Dinner in March. That dinner included Mitja Sirk Bianco Europea Friulano IGT 2022, featured in these pages, excerpted here.

That unique white wine, crafted from the Tocai Friulano grape, was also from the Venezia Giulia Appellation in the Friuli Region from the town of Cormons in Collio, Italy, in the extreme northeastern most corner of Italy, just a mile from the Slovenian border.

The major city or town of Friuli Venezia Giulia is the regional capital of Trieste. Until recently, Friuli Venezia Giulia was divided into four provinces, each named after its principal city, however, in 2018 the system changed whereby the provinces were replaced by a series of territories known as UTIs.The largest cities are the three former provincial capitals of Udine, Gorizia and Pordenone, along with the town of Monfalcone.

Mitja focused on the Fruilano grape, the traditional and most widely planted in Collio, prized for its aromatic delicacy pronounced mineral, floral, and sweet almond notes, with a distinctive note of bitterness at the finish.

WWII took a heavy toll on Collio. In the postwar period, Friuli rebuilt its economy based largely on wine, but it did not emerge as a source of notable wines until the late 1960s.

Ermacora Friulano del Friuli Colli Orientali Rîul Rosso 2014

This is produced by the small family-owned winery of brothers Dario and Luciano Ermacora, whose wines have been imported into the US since the 2001 vintage. Back then they were far better known in Italy, where they continuously garnered accolades from Italian wine pundit Gambero Rosso. Their wines sell out very quickly adhering to their motto: “Do little, in order to do better”.

This producer Ermacora produces a broad portolfio of wines include ten whites, eight reds, a sparkling wine and this red blend

While Colli Orientali is best known for crisp, flavorful white wine made from indigenous varieities like Friulano (formerly known as Tocai Friulano), Ribolla gialla and Malvasia Istriana, red wines, though far less common here, can be quite good, especially when made from the deeply colored, rustic Refosco variety. Many of the classic international varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc are also common.

They tend to be Loire-like in style with herbaceous character and mellow tannins, but Carso’s star grape is the red Teranno, notable for being rich in iron content and historically consumed for health purposes. It has an earthy, meaty profile and is often confused with the distinct variety Refosco.

The landscaped succession of terraced hills are protected by the Julian Pre-Alps and tempered by the Adriatic breezes, with climate moderating forests full of biodiversity, a vast variety of microclimates and vineyards are cultivated between 100 and 200 meters above sea level. The hillside ponca soils imput strong minerality, acidity and structure, conferred by temperature excursions.

The horseshoe-shaped region of eastern Friuli is referred to simply as Collio (“hills”), lying midway between the Julian Alps and the Adriatic Sea. The climate is classic Mediterranean, warm in summer, but, as a classic Alpine area, cold and wet in winter, which provides ideal conditions for the thin-skinned but early-ripening Friulano grapes.

Ermacora Friulano del Friuli Colli Orientali Rîul Rosso 2014

This is the only blend produced by Ermacora, composed of estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the local variant, Refosco dal Peduncolo rosso.

Produced only in the best vintages, it is a blend of select best barriques and tonnaux produced as an interpretation of the famous Bordeaux blend (Merlot and Cabernet), but with a Friulian twist (Refosco), “A tribute to the masters beyond the Alps, but with roots in the territory”.

Winemaker’s Notes - “The three wines - Merlot, Cabernet and Refosco - that make up the blend are vinified separately until just before the Rîul is bottled. After destemming, we prepare the grapes for maceration in steel tanks with pumping over and punching down for a period varying between 10 and 12 days. The racking of the three red wines takes place in stainless steel containers where they complete, again separately, the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation and rest for a few months.’

“We then leave them to mature in small (barriques) and medium-sized (tonneaux) French oak barrels from the Allier forest for a minimum of 36 months. At the end, we choose the barrels that have shown the best evolution and we blend them. We bottle it and wait for a further refinement in glass lying down for a few months in conditioned rooms, then we put it on the market.”

Winemaker’s Tasting notes - “Ruby red, the aroma is elegant with pleasant hints of red fruit where black cherry, plum, and blueberries prevail, leaving room for notes of hay and hints of licorice to close with balsamic puffs. Soft and well structured on the palate with velvety tannins and an almost perfect correspondence between aromas and flavors. Very long finish.”

Bright ruby colored, medium bodied, vibrant expressive full round plum, cherry and berry fruits are accented with notes of liquorice, balsamic tones and cedar with soft velvety tannins on a tangy acidic finish.
