Ramey Fort Ross-Seaview Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Ramey Fort Ross-Seaview Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2017

We opened this for a pleasurable hearty sipper with salads and artisan cheeses. This premium Chardonnay is from Ramey Wine Cellars, producer of a broad portfolio of Chardonnays, Pinots Noirs and some Syrahs.

David Ramey and wife Carla Ramey founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996 focusing on a winemaking style that paired old-world techniques with the premier fruit of Sonoma and Napa. They produce an extensive portfolio of single vineyard wines as well as blends that showcase the characteristics of their sites.

David Ramey is hailed as “Professor Chardonnay” by Wine Spectator Magazine. He has been making wine since the 1970s, known for crafting age-worthy wines, having learned the craft working in Bordeaux..

David Ramey began his career at Simi under the mentorship of Zelma Long, an American wine pioneer who worked at Robert Mondavi. David and Zelma collaborated on developing leading winemaking practices crafting a Chardonnay style now emulated by many.

David spent time at the Moueix in Bordeaux, including Château Pétrus, where he learned from legendary winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet who had learned from Émile Peynaud, who revolutionized quality in modern winemaking. David and Carla Ramey were married in Bordeaux in 1989, while working harvest at Château Pétrus.

Since co-founding Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996, Carla has served as CFO and has managed business operations, sales, and marketing.

The second generation, Claire and Alan Ramey, began working at the winery in 2013 becoming co-presidents of Ramey Wine Cellars in 2021.

Claire Ramey leads viticultural operations, responsible for Ramey’s estate vineyard, Westside Farms, as well as managing the viticultural directives for Ramey’s winegrowing partners.

Alan Ramey worked at Veramonte in Chile and Domaine Méo-Camuzet in Burgundy and competed on the blind tasting team for the University of Cambridge. He currently serves on the Board of the California Wine Institute.

Ramey’s Estate vineyard is 75-acre Westside Farms on the banks of the Russian River has been farmed since the middle 1800s. Wine Spectator has described Westside Farms’ location as “hallowed ground” for lovers of well-structured Chardonnays.

Ramey has an extensive network of grower partnerships with the many of the most highly acclaimed and well known vineyards across Napa and Sonoma County:

This 2017 Chardonnay is the second vintage from the Martinelli family’s Charles Ranch Vineyard in the Fort Ross-Seaview appellation on the Sonoma Coast. Sitting a few miles, two ridges in from the cold Pacific Ocean and its regular dense fog, the vineyards of the Fort Ross-Seaview appellation still manage to achieve impressive ripeness due to their high elevations that often keep them just above the fog line.

The property has been in the Martinelli family since the 1800's. They homesteaded 640 acres and from 1970-1981used a horse to move stakes to the field in small bundles. The vineyard was planted in 1982 by George Hastings Charles, Lee Martinelli’s grandfather.  Lee Jr. has managed the ranch since 1989.

The vineyard is nestled amidst redwoods, bay laurels, and oaks on sprawling, southern-exposed blocks at an elevation of 1,115 feet. Charles Ranch soil is Goldridge sandstone and Josephine shale and old clay. The soils are thin and well drained. Charles Ranch receives two times as much rain as vineyards in the Russian River Valley.

The growing season typically experiences a period of drought, with variable spring weather that often extends the bloom period. This necessitates careful green drops at veraison. The temperatures usually stabilize in June, remaining moderate through harvest, resulting in a cool, even growing season. Yields can vary, often being especially low for Chardonnay sites.

The vineyard was carefully planted with Clone 4 and Old Wente.

After aging for 12 months in 10% new French oak barrels, the Chardonnay is traditionally fined for clarity and texture during the following harvest and bottled without filtration. The result is a 100% Chardonnay varietal composition that reflects the unique characteristics of the vineyard and the meticulous winemaking process.

“Coming from a special vineyard site, our Sonoma Coast Chardonnays show great depth of flavor, length of finish, aromatic complexity, and a fine balance between richness and delicacy. This vineyard has typically cool climates, low vigor soil, and a vine selection that generate small berries, small clusters and inherently low yields.” – David Ramey

Winemaker Notes - This is the second vintage to come exclusively from the Martinelli Charles Ranch, two miles in from the Pacific. Coming entirely from this vineyard site, our Sonoma Coast Chardonnay shows great depth of flavor, length of finish, aromatic complexity, and a fine balance between richness and delicacy. This vineyard has a typically cool climate, low vigor soil, and a vine selection that generates small berries, small clusters and inherently low yields

It was rated 94 Points by Wine Enthusiast, Virginie Boone, 93 points by Wilfred Wong of Wine.com and 92 points by Jeb Dunnuck and Wine Spectator.

Golden straw colored, medium bodied, ripe, rich apple and pear fruits, lemon zest, earthy, herbal white floral notes with background oak, bright acidity, and a nicely balanced mineral laced finish.

RM 92 points.

Fun with Small Bottles Chardonnay Tasting

Small is Better Offering Two Tastings in One - Fun with Small Bottles

Following the tasting of Rombauer Chardonnay at the Vin Chicago Rombauer Wine Dinner at Adelle's Restaurant the other night, I picked up a half bottle at Binny's to enjoy the following evening. I also picked up a half bottle of Ramey Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2013.

As I've written in these pages (screens) before, buying 375ml half bottles allows one to enjoy two wines with dinner rather than just one. Tonight, this provided the chance to do a comparison tasting of the just discovered/tasted Rombauer Chardonnay 2014, alongside another known brand and label, Ramey Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2013, also available in half bottle small format.

Or course, one could open two bottles of wine, but the half bottle provides an affordable, convenient comparison tasting.

Such comparison tastings provide not only a fun experience, but a more in-depth and revealing side-by-side comparison of one against the other. A selection of half bottles can be found at Binny's Beverage Depot, the wine mega-merchant super store (pictured below).

For a casual Friday night dinner and wine and cheese tasting, Linda prepared her delicious, decadent Baked Brie Cheese in Filo Dough with toasted almonds, whipped fresh berries, and honey.

Interesting, the tasting revealed our preference for the less expensive Rombauer over the Ramey. Both were awesome when paired with the berry fruit, nut cheese and honey plate.

Rombauer Carneros Chardonnay 2014

We had this wine just last evening at the winemaker dinner, served with seared U12 scallop, vanilla bean butter sauce, and mango-pineapple salsa. The Chardonnay was one of the highlights of the dinner tasting flight of six wines across five courses. So it was, ideal to compare it against another similar Chardonnay.

From the 2014 vintage, another ideal growing season with warm, dry conditions that resulted in excellent fruit quality that resulted in wine with rich flavors and a creamy texture for great QPR - quality price ratio in a quality Napa Chardonnay.

Butter colored, medium bodied, pleasant aromas and rich bright flavors of citrus with tones of pear and creamy vanilla, with hints of mango, melon, spice and butter with nice acidity on the tangy finish.

Ramey Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2013

This 2013 Russian River Chardonnay is 36% from four different Dutton ranches (Perry, Mengle, Sebastopol & Mill Station); 16% from Martinelli’s Laughlin Road Vineyard; 13% from King Vineyard; 13% from four Rochioli vineyards (Allen, Mid-40, River, Hill); 10% from Forchini Vineyard; 5% from Westside Farms; 4% Frostwatch; and 3% from Hudson Vineyard.

Clear, pale straw color, medium bodied, this is a complex cacaphony of flavors - fruits, toasted nuts, spices - perhaps revealing the broad multitude of sources in the blend. This is a contrasting style to the Rombauer - firmer, tighter and more structured and more complex, probably more suited to more complex and bigger food accompaniment, but less suited to the mild baked brie with berry fruit and honey, which set up well with the pear, vanilla, citrus tones of the Rombauer. Hold this for grilled Salmon entree.

A compendium of notes from the popular well known reviewers refer to this wine's power and elegance, rounder, weightier and richer with with flavors as diverse as apricot pit, mint, butter and dried flowers blossom, baking spices and honeysuckle, finishing with a mineral bite for some contrapuntal complexity....

A fun and revealing comparison and tasting none-the-less.

Napa Valley Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignons flight and Carneros Chardonnay

Napa Valley Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignons flight and Carneros Chardonnay

For a gala dinner to celebrate Beth's birthday, we opened a flight of Napa Valley Howell Mountain big Cabernet Sauvignons to go with NY Strip steaks from the farm. Starting with caprese salad, lobster medallions were featured with a Napa Valley Carneros Chardonnay and Champagne. Artisan cheeses included Fair Oaks Farms aged cheddar cheeses - 2, 3 and 5 years old.We finished with Linda's fabulous flowerless dark chocolate cake and Eiswein.

Main course big cabs flight ...

Clark Claudon Napa Valley Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

This was the consensus favorite of the tasting.

Deep dark purple - full bodied - big mouth-full of forward complex but polished spicy black and edge of red berry fruits, violets, layers of mocha and oak with a long lingering tannin finish.

The 2004 Napa growing season was condensed with early bud break, warm days, cool nights and one challenging heat spike. The result was a small harvest of intense, flavor packed fruit from an unusual, but exceptional year that is showing and drinking well and should last another decade.

We first met Tom Clark and Laurie Claudon-Clark during our Napa Wine Experience 1999 when we hosted them at our wine dinner at Pinot Blanc in St Helena (see picture left). We tasted Clark Claudon 1995-96 against ten year 1989 Bordeaux. Our vertical collection of  Clark Claudon continues to this day.

Ramey Napa Valley Carneros Hudson Vineyard Chardonnay 2005

This was highly praised by everyone. Medium bodied with  golden yellow color; full forward creamy flavors of pear, lychee and baked apple with hints of nut, caramel, and touch of citrus - nice structure and depth with a well balanced clean and crisp lingering aftertaste.

Situated in the rolling hills of Carneros in the southern Napa Valley on the road to Sonoma sits Hudson Ranch whose Hudson Vineyards source grapes to over 32 wineries throughout Napa and Sonoma counties.Carneros is one of the nations finest grape growing regions where the cool breezes off north San Francisco Bay allow the grapes a longer hang time in which to develop flavor and intensity, without sacrificing acidity and balance. The Hudson site was originally known as Talcoa Vineyards, an Indian name meaning ‘laughing land.’ It was on these lands in the 1880’s that the first American successful scientific experiments were carried out to overcome phylloxera, which was devastating the vineyards of Europe.

Hudson Vineyards produces 10 different grape varietals in the Los Carneros AVA of Napa, California on 160 acres.Only a select few producers that source their grapes from Hudson produce wines that bear the ‘Hudson Vineyards’ designation. These producers are those whom Hudson Vineyards has established long term contracts to for specific blocks of the vineyards. Those wines are of great importance and interest as those are sites of intense, interesting, varietal distinctiveness.to the grower and the winemakers.

The vineyards north of the Carneros Highway, but further west, have terrain that is more rolling with lighter more  friable soil. This year’s bottling is the second to come entirely from B-block, planted in 2001 to a Wente selection from the Hyde Vineyard, so the vines were eight years old this vintage and further developing their maturity resulting in Hudson Vineyard wines being more muscular and masculine broad-shouldered character.

Joseph Phelps Napa Valley Eisrebe 2010

100% estate-grown Scheurebe from a Spring Valley Vineyards outside of St. Helena. The Scheurebe grapes are picked late in the season and then frozen, thereby concentrating their already high sugar levels resulting in a wine viscous and smooth, with good acidity levels to balance the sweetness, and luscious flavors of citrus and apricot. The grapes are left to shrivel on the vines. They must reach the same level of sugar concentration
as Beerenauslese.

Pale gold, full  bodied. Predominant full concentrated Peach flavor with hints of apricot, orange oil and clove on the luscious long lingering finish and aftertaste.
