Cliff Lede Sauvignon Blanc for refreshing summer sipper

A casual evening at home, continuing our viewing of the Netflix series, Blindspot, we opened this Cliff Lede Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc with a plate of artisan cheeses, biscuits and fresh berries. 

We hold a half dozen vintages of this label and pulled the oldest vintage in the cellar as part of effective cellar rotation and inventory management.

Cliff Lede is one of our favorite producers and a visit to the Napa Valley Stag's Leap District estate has been a highlight of several of Napa Valley excursions.

The Cliff Lede winery estate and vineyards with their picturesque sculpture gardens at Yountville Cross Road and Silverado Trail are one of our popular visits during our many trips to Napa Valley. We've had many memorable visits there with the most memorable, our private tour and tasting during our Napa Wine Experience 2009.

In certain vintages this is our favorite Sauvignon Blanc with its bright expressive fruits - pear, lychee, passion fruit and peach with hints of grapefruit and notes of lemon citrus. This 2017 is one of those vintages - butter colored, medium bodied, crisp clean, full flavorful fruits with nicely balanced acidity.

RM 91 points.

Fellow Pour Boy, wind buddy Bill C had posted - "Crisp, clean and refreshing. Pale straw color. Zesty grapefruit and lemon on the palate. Nicely balanced acidity. Always a favorite."

Wife Linda prepared roasted chicken with tomatoes, onions, peppars and cheese, served with baked apples and arugula and sweet potatoes, with toasted Parmesan sour dough bread. 

I had already pulled from the cellar this hearty Aussie Shiraz, the oldest in our vertical collection of this label spanning half dozen vintages.  


As chronicled in my recent blogpost, excerpted below, on the Long Shadows Vintner's Collection, this is part of the portfolio of six premium wines produced by legendary winemakers from around the world who are masters for their artwork with specific varietal wines.

At ten years of age, the label, foil, and most importantly the fill level and cork (shown) were ideal condition. This was likely at the apex of its drinking window, but will certainly hold for several more years to come. 


Long Shadows Wineries Vintner’s Collection Sequel Syrah 2015

This Sequel Syrah is crafted by legendary Syrah winemaker John Duval, known for the leading Syrah label from Australia, Penfold's Grange. We hold a OWC (original wood case) of the 1990 Penfold's Grange, commemorating Alec's birth year. That label was Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year for the year 1993. 

I wrote back then, “This could likely improve with some further aging as it could benefit from some time to settle and should improve with a couple more years to achieve more balance and harmony as it reaches the apex of its drinking window, which clearly will be another decade or more. With our deep cellar, we'd normally hold a bottle like this for a while before consuming but we tried it now since it is available still at Binny's, our local wine super store so we can go get some more to replace this bottle and stock up some more, (even though we're in the highest level of the Long Shadows wine club and will be receiving some in our shipment allocation; but that will be the next 2016 vintage and we'll want to hold the '15, as it is birthyear of two grandkids, Reid and Jessie.).” 

We just acquired a mixed case of vintage Long Shadows in their cellar clearance so we pulled this, the oldest vintage in our collection of this label as part of cellar management. 

Consistent with that earlier tasting …. 

Dark inky purple colored, rich, thick concentrated ripe black berry and black raspberry fruits, black pepper, smoked meat and subtle notes of camphor, vanilla and caramel.

Linda prepared a delicious homemade pizza with bacon, onion, chives, basil, honey cooked tomatoes and Parmesan. Following a delightful Malbec we had at lunch the other day, I pulled this Argentine Malbec for an accompaniment. As I have written often in these pages, an ideal food and wine pairing, such as this, accentuates and amplifies the enjoyment of both!

Malbec is one of the five sanctioned Bordeaux varietals. It has found a home in Argentina where it has gained wide adoption and popularity as being ideally suited to the terroir there and is the number one grape varietal in the emerging burgeoning wine market.

We did a Malbec wine tasting with Linda’s woman’s social group last year wherein I wrote about the producer of this label, Zuccardi - Woman’s Social Group Argentine Wine Tasting.

One of those labels, like this one, was from the Zuccardi Family Winery in Maipú, Mendoza, Argentina. Today it is run by winemaker Sebastián Zuccardi whose grandfather planted the first grapevines in 1963 and has grown to become a leader in Argentine wine production.

From his father, José Alberto Zuccardi, Sebastián inherited the determination and desire to constantly strive for excellence.

Sebastián, third generation of the family, follows his father, José Alberto Zuccardi, leading a team of agricultural engineers and enologists, in producing some of the the highest quality wines in the Uco Valley.

The winery has had a research and development area since 2008, dedicated to studying the terroir and the diverse variables that affect wine quality. The goal, in Sebastián’s own words, is “not to strive for perfect wines, but wines that express the place, the region.”

The Zuccardi family have been exploring and experimenting with the potential of Malbec in the winery with new fermentation and aging vessels, and in the vineyard by challenging the accepted wisdom of the limits of viticulture and have moved their vines (and winery) closer to the Andes.

Poliganos is a family of Zuccardi wines, six white and six red from several sites across the Uco Valley representing a selection that expresses the particular characteristics of different terroirs within the Valley. 

The wines and the selection of vineyards account for the differences in altitude, soil and climate that characterize the subregions of San Pablo, Paraje Altamira and Tupungato. 

According to the rear label, the name “Poliganos refers to the many sides of a vineyard. Sebastián Zuccardi explores those many sides with grape selections from the micro regions of Mendoza, discovering how they impact the wines in their unique ways.”

This is 100% Malbec grapes from estate vineyards in the San Pablo Geographic Indication (GI), Tunuyán, Valle de Uco, Mendoza at 1,400m – one of the coolest regions in the Uco Valley.  Of all the Malbecs in the Polígonos range, the 2021 Polígonos San Pablo Malbec is the lighter and lowest in alcohol, coming from the cooler place, it is always the last Malbec to be harvested. A new addition to the Aluvional series is the 2021 Aluvional San Pablo, derived from vines planted in 2013 and entirely destemmed.

Located between 1,200 and 1,700 meters above sea level, and only 600 meters away from the mountain front, San Pablo has a cold and extreme climate, with very low minimum temperatures. Trees and streams abound in its landscape, configuring a true oasis in the foothills. Its alluvial soils originated in the Las Tunas River and present a layer of medium-sized gravel covered with calcareous material at approximately one meter deep. 

The whole Polígonos range represents very good value, all from owned vineyards that are worked organically but not certified. It is fermented with native yeasts in concrete vessels and aged in concrete.

This release was rated 95 by James Suckling and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 94 pts by Decanter and 93 pts by Vinous.

Winemaker Notes - “2021 was a great harvest. With cool and humid weather, the grape clusters had the necessary time to reach maturity with a perfect balance of sugar and acidity, and a strong tannin structure. Our meticulous work of separating plots and soil types for harvesting (which has been ongoing for over a decade) allowed us to harvest every corner of our vineyards at the perfect moment and thus showcase the great diversity that characterizes the Uco Valley.’

“Red in color with violet hues, the 2021 San Pablo Malbec expresses a great herbal character with notes of fresh red fruits. Lively acidity and subtlety of tannins in the mouth.”

This wine provides high QPR - Quality Price Ratio, being from Argentina, and being a Malbec, the least known varietal of the Bordeaux grapes. 

Deep inky garnet colored, full bodied, dense, rich, concentrated black berry and blue berry fruits accented by savory notes of black tea, herbs and tobacco leaf on a lively acidic tannin laced finish.

We attended grand-daughter Lucy’s graduation where she received several honors including giving a speech to the entire graduating class and guests. 

It’s hard to believe time passes so quickly and we’re so proud of her. 

We came home for a late dinner and pulled from the cellar one of our favorite wines from her birthyear vintage as our own mini tribute celebration. 

We ate some of the leftover ribeye steak from the other evening, along with baked sweet potatoes, ideally paired with this Right Bank Bordeaux blend. 

Uriah Spring Valley Vineyards Red Blend 2010

This was a fitting selection, not only as a birthyear vintage, but it is also a family oriented label and producer. All the Spring Valley Vineyars labels are named for a family member. This label “Uriah”, is named for the Spring Valley Vineyards founder Uriah Corkrum, grandfather of matriarch owner producer Shari Corkrum Derby. 

All of the Spring Valley wines are named for one of the ancestral or current family members and are showcased in an annual box set. Shown is our set commemorating the 2013 vintage releases, one of several in our collection. 

Uriah Corkrum was born in Walla Walla on June 1, 1866. He began successfully farming on his own during the 1880s. Unusual summer rain kept him from getting his harvested wheat to the warehouse so he lost everything in the depression of 1893. He persevered and, in 1897, acquired land in the area known as Spring Valley that is the site of the vineyards today. 

Uriah is featured on the flagship label Uriah Spring Valley Red Blend. This is our favorite label from the Spring Valley portfolio. 

Spring Valley Vineyard wines are all produced from 100% estate-grown fruit, a relative rarity in Washington. Washington State and regional powerhouse Chateau Ste. Michelle Wine Estates purchased the winery and the brand from the Derby family recently, but they continue to own and operate the vineyards.

We visited Spring Valley during our appellation visit to the Walla Walla (Washington) wine region in the fall of 2018. We visited the Spring Valley Vineyardtasting room in downtown Walla Walla, then ventured out to the vineyards and winery northeast of town. There, we met Dean Derby patriarch, and husband to Shari Corkrum Derby, grand-daughter of Uriah Corkrum, namesake for this label.

Meeting Mr. Derby was one of the highlights of our Walla Walla Wine Experience, especially since he has since passed on. We posted a Tribute to Dean Derby and memorium of that visit - Spring Valley Vineyard toward the end of 2021.

The Uriah label from Spring Valley Vineyards in Walla Walla, Washington is a “Right BankBordeaux Blend, meaning it is Merlot based like those from the northeastern or right bank of the Gironde River.

Spring Valley Vineyards “Uriah” Walla Walla Valley Red Wine 2010

This release was rated 94 points by Wine Spectator back in 2013, and was recognized “Top 100 Wines of 2013, Highly Recommended”.

In the Right Bank Bordeaux style this is 46% Merlot, 40%, Cabernet Franc, 6%, Petite Verdot, 5%, Cabernet Sauvignon and 3%, Malbec.

At fifteen years, the foil, label, and most importantly, the cork and fill level were perfect and this was likely at the apex of its drinking window, still young and capable of aging for several more years. 

I wrote about this wine back in 2013 when I wrote: “ This may be the most expressive Uriah I have tasted. It is the most complex on the front and most vibrant on the finish that I remember. We hold each vintage going back to 2002.”

Tonight was consistent with that earlier tasing. Dark ruby colored, full bodied, complex layers of tight spicy red currant and black raspberry fruits, accented by spicy clove, hints of smoky anise and tobacco, turning to a big mouthful of subtle cinnamon and hint of mocha on a tongue tingling acidic finish with smooth dusty tannins.

Monday night Gia Mia carry out pizza dinner with Alec, Vivianna and grand-daughters, I took a robust Italian Red Blend for a wine accompaniment that I had set aside in the cooler for such an occasion.

This is from the Friuli Colli Orientali D.O.C. in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia wine region in the northeastern most corner of Italy near the Slovenian border. Friuli-Venezia Giulia is best known for some of Italy’s best and most distinctive white wines. The styles of wines produced in this region of Italy's far north-east corner reflect the merging of cultures where Italian, Germanic and Slavic cultures converge.

Often shortened to just “Friuli,” the area is divided into many distinct subzones, including Friuli Grave, Colli Orientali del Friuli, Collio Goriziano and Carso. 

The most northerly subregion of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the Colli Orientali del Friuli (graciously referred to as COF) is also the largest wine producer of the three important DOC zones and ten subregions in Friuli, with 135 producers crafting nearly 2500 different wines. 

The flat valley of Friuli Grave is responsible for a large proportion of the region’s wine production, particularly the approachable Pinot Grigio and the popular Prosecco. The best vineyard locations are primarily on the hillsides, as in Colli Orientali del Friuli or Collio. In general, Friuli boasts an ideal climate for viticulture, with warm sunny days and chilly nights, which allow grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. 

Many varieties of wine grapes are grown in the Friuli Colli Orientali D.O.C., best known for great whites, but the area also grows and produces red wine varieties, which include the noble Bordeaux classics such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, but also includes numerous local varietals as well. 

We featured another wine from the Venezia Giulia Appellation recently as part of the Sepia Curated Wine Pairing Dinner in March. That dinner included Mitja Sirk Bianco Europea Friulano IGT 2022, featured in these pages, excerpted here.  

That unique white wine, crafted from the Tocai Friulano grape, was also from the Venezia Giulia Appellation in the Friuli Region from the town of Cormons in Collio, Italy, in the extreme northeastern most corner of Italy, just a mile from the Slovenian border. 

The major city or town of Friuli Venezia Giulia is the regional capital of Trieste. Until recently, Friuli Venezia Giulia was divided into four provinces, each named after its principal city, however, in 2018 the system changed whereby the provinces were replaced by a series of territories known as UTIs.The largest cities are the three former provincial capitals of Udine, Gorizia and Pordenone, along with the town of Monfalcone. 

Mitja focused on the Fruilano grape, the traditional and most widely planted in Collio, prized for its aromatic delicacy pronounced mineral, floral, and sweet almond notes, with a distinctive note of bitterness at the finish.

WWII took a heavy toll on Collio. In the postwar period, Friuli rebuilt its economy based largely on wine, but it did not emerge as a source of notable wines until the late 1960s. 

Ermacora Friulano del Friuli Colli Orientali Rîul Rosso 2014

This is produced by the small family-owned winery of brothers Dario and Luciano Ermacora, whose wines have been imported into the US since the 2001 vintage. Back then they were far better known in Italy, where they continuously garnered accolades from Italian wine pundit Gambero Rosso. Their wines sell out very quickly adhering to their motto: “Do little, in order to do better”.

While Colli Orientali is best known for crisp, flavorful white wine made from indigenous varieities like Friulano (formerly known as Tocai Friulano), Ribolla gialla and Malvasia Istriana, red wines, though far less common here, can be quite good, especially when made from the deeply colored, rustic Refosco variety. Many of the classic international varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc are also common. 

They tend to be Loire-like in style with herbaceous character and mellow tannins, but Carso’s star grape is the red Teranno, notable for being rich in iron content and historically consumed for health purposes. It has an earthy, meaty profile and is often confused with the distinct variety Refosco.

The landscaped succession of terraced hills are protected by the Julian Pre-Alps and tempered by the Adriatic breezes, with climate moderating forests full of biodiversity, a vast variety of microclimates and vineyards are cultivated between 100 and 200 meters above sea level. The hillside ponca soils imput strong minerality, acidity and structure, conferred by temperature excursions.

The horseshoe-shaped region of eastern Friuli is referred to simply as Collio (“hills”), lying midway between the Julian Alps and the Adriatic Sea. The climate is classic Mediterranean, warm in summer, but, as a classic Alpine area, cold and wet in winter, which provides ideal conditions for the thin-skinned but early-ripening Friulano grapes.

This is the only blend produced by Ermacora, composed of estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the local variant, Refosco dal Peduncolo rosso. 

Produced only in the best vintages, it is a blend of select best barriques and tonnaux produced as an interpretation of the famous Bordeaux blend (Merlot and Cabernet), but with a Friulian twist (Refosco), “A tribute to the masters beyond the Alps, but with roots in the territory”. 

Winemaker’s Notes - “The three wines - Merlot, Cabernet and Refosco - that make up the blend are vinified separately until just before the Rîul is bottled. After destemming, we prepare the grapes for maceration in steel tanks with pumping over and punching down for a period varying between 10 and 12 days. The racking of the three red wines takes place in stainless steel containers where they complete, again separately, the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation and rest for a few months.’

“We then leave them to mature in small (barriques) and medium-sized (tonneaux) French oak barrels from the Allier forest for a minimum of 36 months. At the end, we choose the barrels that have shown the best evolution and we blend them. We bottle it and wait for a further refinement in glass lying down for a few months in conditioned rooms, then we put it on the market.”

Winemaker’s Tasting notes - “Ruby red, the aroma is elegant with pleasant hints of red fruit where black cherry, plum, and blueberries prevail, leaving room for notes of hay and hints of licorice to close with balsamic puffs. Soft and well structured on the palate with velvety tannins and an almost perfect correspondence between aromas and flavors. Very long finish.”

Bright ruby colored, medium bodied, vibrant expressive full round plum, cherry and berry fruits are accented with notes of liquorice, balsamic tones and cedar with soft velvety tannins on a tangy acidic finish.

Back home from our vacation getaway to Destin, FL, we enjoyed a grilled Tomahawk ribeye beefsteak and vintage premium Napa Cabernet for Sunday night dinner. 


This steak was one of many Linda acquired for a gala family celebration dinner recently

I pulled from the cellar this Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the Mount Veeder estate winery of the late Robin Williams, comedian and actor. I selected this label after seeing the several vintages of the ultra-premium Tesseron Pym Rae on the Premium Limited and Rare wine list at Ravello Restaurant Montgomery the other night, each listed for $750. The Tesseron global beverage empire acquired the Robin Williams estate after his passing, rebranding the wines sourced from this historic vineyard. Previously, the grapes were sold to Robert Craig winery who bottled this single appellation Mt Veeder label for more than two decades


It should be noted, the Tesseron Pym Rae release is a single vineyard designated select bottling. Notably, we also hold in our cellar two other single vineyard designated select bottling from the Pym-Rae vineyard, one released by Pilcrow, the other by Marco DiGuilio, in addition to the Tesseron label. We’ll look forward to featuring these perhaps in a comparison tasting, in a future review posting. 




We visited the Robert Craig estate winery high atop Howell Mountain on several occasions, including the Robert Craig Howell Mountain Harvest Party '09. Robert Craig Napa Valley Cabernets are instantiated in at least six different labels including this vineyard designated select Mt Veeder, and are one of the largest producer holdings in our cellar collection.

The previous time we served this wine at one of our wine dinners, it was poignant tasting and reminiscing over this wine. We recalled tasting this wine with Robert Craig on numerous occasions and he recollecting this is his favorite of the vineyard selections. 

We talked of the recent end of the supplier relationship for this fruit source as the legendary Pym Rae Vineyard, previously owned by the late Robin Williams, was sold to a major French producer who acquired the sixteen hundred acre estate and plan to enter the Napa Valley marketplace. We recall Robert's reminiscences of Robin for whom he worked and managed the vineyards back in the nineties, (telling the story how Robin William’s early winery label Toad Hollow, was named such because at an early age, he mis-pronounced his older brother Todd’s name thusly.) 

I shared these stories with Ian O’Brian, the Matre’d at Ravello, as backgrounder info on the ultra-premium wines he was featuring on their wine list. 

Robert Craig Napa Valley Mt Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

As I mentioned, Robert Craig Napa Valley Cabernets represent one of the largest holdings in our cellar. We hold variations of the portfolio dating back to the inaugural release in 1993. 

I pulled this label to commemorate the Mount Veeder estate. I selected this vintage as a ‘Goldilocks’ release, at twenty years of age, not too old, and not too young.

We still hold several bottles of this label release. I selected this particular bottle as it had the lowest fill level, however, at 21 years, it was acceptable, and the foil, label, and most importantly, the cork were still in pristine condition.

Tonight this bottle showed better than earlier tastings of this release as the fruits were more expressive and pronounced, earning an additional two points from my earlier reviews.

This release got 92 points from Connoisseur's Guide and Wine Enthusiast.

Dark garnet colored, medium full bodied, nicely integrated and well balanced, bright vibrant black cherry, black currant and black raspberry fruits accented by notes of cassis, smokey oak, dark mocha and hints of cedar with moderate dusty tannins on the lingering finish.

RM 93 points.

This is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, & 2% Cabernet Franc.

Returning home from our Destin, Florida vacation getaway we stopped in Montgomery, AL for dinner. What a pleasant surprise to discover the history and architecture of Alabama’s state capitol city, and the Capital campus and grounds, federal building (s), and parks and monuments, testaments to the historic old south slave markets and the civil rights movement. It is definitely worth a return trip as a destination in it’s own right to explore further! 

We were drawn to Montgomery to dine at Ravello Restaurant with its fine dining offering coastal Italian cuisine based on the rich culinary heritage of the Italian Amalfi Coast, with fresh seafood, pastas and meats, and Wine Spectator Award of Excellence wine list.


Ravello’s magnificent multi-story dining room boasts historic architecture of a former bank. The site was a City Fed restoration project, integrating three buildings from 1926, which now house Ravello its rooftop Bar Attico and private event spaces, in the heart of downtown Montgomery, blocks from the government district.


For a starter we shared the Roasted Beet Salad with Arugula, candied blood orange, prosciutto, goat cheese and blood orarange vinaigrette. 

Linda ordered the Seared Gulf Red Snapper with Salsa Verde, and a side of the Brussels Sprouts which were extraordinary and a highlight of the meal.


For my dinner I had the Filet of Beef with black garlic butter and a side of Polenta. 

The Ravello wine list/cellar offers 265 different wines from a collection of 2200 bottles. The twelve page Ravello wine list holds a.Wine Spectator Awarded with two pages of WBTG - Wines By The Glass, a page of Champagne and Sparkling wines, a page of Whites, three pages of Reds, plus a page of Reserve Wines, a page of Limited and Rare Wines, and a page of La Sirena wines by legendary winemaker Heidi Barrett. 

Some of the highlights or interesting labels are three vintages of TESSERON ESTATE "PYM-RAE" MT. VEEDER RED BLEND at $750 each, and culminating in a DOMAINE DE LE ROMANEE-CONTI “ECHEZEAUX” GRAND CRU 2020 for $1800. Pages of the wine list are shown below:




Repeating what I have often said about such wine lists, that “I can’t afford to drink my own cellar”, two wines that we drank from our cellar recently were offered, notably, Chateau Gruaud Larose 2005 (Gruaud Larose BYOB at Entourage DG) for $575, and Chateau Palmer (Family Christmas Celebration Dinner) 2011 for $950. 

That said, it just so happened I had in the car a vintage Bordeaux that I was transporting from our Destin remote wine cellar back home, so I pulled it for a BYOB wine accompaniment with our dinner. Based on the above calibrations, it would’ve carried a wine list price of around $600. (This bottle was brought by fellow ‘Pour Boy’ wine buddy Lyle to Destin for a recent visit and we didn’t get to it during our multiple dinners. Château Smith Haut Lafitte Pessac-Léognan Grand Cru Classe’ Bordeaux 2012 

The Château Smith Haut Lafitte estate lies about 30 km south of the City of Bordeaux, 4 km outside the village of Léognan. 

The historic estate dates back to the 14th century when Verrier Du Bosq signed the first recorded deeds for a few vine rows. George Smith, a Scottish wine merchant, acquired the property in the mid-18th century and named it after himself.

The Fleurs-de-lis emblem logo on the label represents the three branches for George Smith’s three children, and representing the Verrier du Bosq family who founded the vineyard, a crescent emblematic of the Port of Bordeaux: the “Port of the Moon”. The port became an important wine export shipping center sending regional wines to England and the Netherlands and beyond.

In 1842, the estate was acquired by Lodi Martin Duffour-Dubergier, Mayor of Bordeaux, and signer of the official 1855 classification, who elevated Smith Haut Lafitte wines to Grand Cru Exceptional status.

In the early 20th century, the négociant firm Eschenauer, headed by the famous “Uncle Louis” Eschenauer, sold Smith Haut Lafitte wines and ended up buying the château in 1958.

In 1990, the estate was acquired by current owners, Daniel and Florence Cathiard, acquired with the firm intention of continuing its tradition of excellence, “to do everything possible to make each vintage of red and white wine worthy of our magnificent terroir.” 

The estate terroir boasts the classic Gravels « Graves Gunziennes » forcing the vines to dig more than 6 meters deep and the grapes benefit from the stones’ mirror effect from the sun to aid in optimal ripening. The vines average age is 38 years. 

The Cathiards Aspent spent three years renovating the estate and now live there in the 18th century chartreuse dating from George Smith’s time. Grounds of forests, hedges, and hives surround the 87 hectares of the single block vineyard.

This 2012 release is 55 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 % Merlot, 4 % Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.
It was aged 18 months on lees in French oak barrels (60 % new) made at the Château onsite cooperage, with one racking only, and then ageing adjusted for each wine.

Comments by Fabien Teitgen, Technical Director - “Château Smith Haut Lafitte red 2012 offers a beautiful dark bright red colour with blue hue. The already expressive nose reveals very fresh notes of red fruits (strawberry, cherry) with a hint of smoke. Once aerated, the nose complexity appears with delicate notes of spices (star anise, liquorice, cinnamon), of red fruits as well as beautiful and elegant flower notes. Then the nose stretches out with terroir aromas of flint stone and fireplace. The attack in mouth is fresh and balanced with a fleshy and unctuous texture. The wine is a subtle balance between maturity and freshness: the maturity from the concentration, the impressive unctuosity and sugarity and the beautiful structure of long and classy tannins; the freshness from the tension, the dynamism and the aroma sparkle. The aromatic is very close to that of the nose, characterised by the freshness with crunchy red fruits, spices notes of liquorice, dry herbs, fireplace and flint stone.”

With a suggested drinking window of 2017 - 2027, this is no doubt at its apex for optimal consumption, but will certainly continue to hold for another decade or more.

This release was rated 95 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, and a concensus 94 points by Decanter, James Suckling, Vinous, Wine Enthusiast (*Cellar Selection*) and Wine Spectator. 

Describing the 2012 release Decanter wrote, “ By this point, more than 20 years of intelligent investment by owners Daniel and Florence Cathiard had paid off.” Vinous wrote “ This is another classy Pessac-Léognan and a wonderful example from Pessac-Léognan that might well be leading the pack at this stage.”

This is as good as and as memorable Smith Haut Lafitte I recall ever having tasted, except perhaps their monumental 100 point release a few years ago. 

We enjoy tasting each new release of this label and meeting the producer as regular participants in each year’s UGCB release tour tasting in Chicago each year, (Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux (UGCB)),  

Dark garnet-purple colored, medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, complex, rich and pure nicely integrated blackberry and hints of blueberry fruits with notes of tobacco, chocolate, coffee, spice, black tea and tar with smooth polished velvety plush tannins and a long, long finish.

Hosting friends Bob & Gloria and Jose and JaJa, at our Destin, FL vacation home, we dined at scenic Beach Walk Café, Henderson Park Inn, Destin, with its picturesque views of the Gulf Coast beach and off-shore horizon, and the towers of Destin across Henderson State Beach Park in the distance, arguably one of the best views along the Emerald Coast.



I’ve written about Henderson Beachwalk Cafe Dinner with a view in this blogpost in many blogposts in these pages as it has become one of our favorite go-to dining destinations in the area which where we dine regularly when in town. 

While we love the atmosphere, ambiance and menu selections, although their wine list is limited, especially for pairing with coastal seafood. So, as is our usual practice, tonight we brought from our home cellar BYOB our own Napa Valley Carneros single vineyard designated label Chardonnay.

For starters, Linda and I ordered the Mixed Greens Salad with Strawberries, Pecans, Goat Cheese, and Maple Bacon Vinaigrette.


Jose ordered my favorite dish, from the menu fresh seafood local catches and one of their signature dishes, Grouper Vince with Pecan Crusted, Crispy Potato Cake, Haricot Verts, Honey Worcestershire Sauce.


Gloria and I each ordered the Snapper with Corn Truffle Risotto, Madeira Mushrooms, Matchstick Truffle Fries, Citrus Beurre Blanc sauce. 


Linda ordered the Beachwalk Cafe signature crab cases. 


Bob ordered the Sesame Crusted Yellowfin Tuna with Garlic and Ginger Black Bean Bok Choy with Ponzu Sauce (shown) while Ja Ja had the Shrimp.


We ordered from the limited wine list a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc for pairing along with our BYOB Chardonnay, featured below:

Nickel & Nickel Napa Valley Carneros Truchard Vineyard Chardonnay 2022

This is from Nickel & Nickel, a subsidiary of the legendary ultra-premium producer Far Niente Winery and Vineyards. If you've visited Napa Valley, you passed their winery estate on St Helena Highway 29 in Oakville as you enter Napa Valley from the south.

Nickel & Nickel was established by the partners of Far Niente in 1997 focused on producing single-vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the appellation's most significant growing regions. Dedicated exclusively to producing 100 percent varietal, single-vineyard wines that best express the distinct personality of each vineyard, they expanded their portfolio to also produce single-vineyard Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah wines.

Nickel & Nickel focus on 100% varietal, single-vineyard designated wines, sourced from as many as seventeen different vineyards, primarily in Napa Valley, but now extended to include some sites in the Sonoma County Russian River Valley appellation.

Their approach emphasizes selection of the very best vineyard locations and unique soil compositions required to make superior single-vineyard wines. Each Nickel & Nickel wine is a celebration of 'place' or terroir. It's amazing how such can reveal how vineyards only miles apart, but of the same grape varietal, yield wines of unique character and distinction.

This label release is 100% Chardonnay from the Truchard Vineyard located in the heart of Carneros AVA, prized for its rolling hills, sun exposure, and cool, breezy conditions that allow long, even ripening. 

Nickel & Nickel wines are produced from 14 select acres of this 270-acre vineyard, planted in 2007, composed of volcanic ash and rock with a southwestern exposure. The growing season tends to be long in this cooler area, allowing for fully mature fruit at harvest.

The Carneros region straddles the southernmost portions at the confluence of the Sonoma and Napa valleys, lying just north of the San Pablo Bay (an offshoot of the San Francisco Bay). There, the bay winds and fog, created when warm inland air meets cool sea air, keep temperatures relatively low, making this California wine region perfect for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Indeed many of our favorite and many memorable wines are from Carneros vineyards from some of the most heralded producers.

At initial review time, this vintage release has not yet been rated but the previous two vintage years it was rated 93 points and 95 points in 2019.

Golden straw colored, medium bodied, full round concentrated pear and apple notes with expressive sprites of mineral and roasted nut with hints of toasted oak on a full lingering bright acidic finish.

RM 92 points.

St Emilion Grand Cru duo w/ Beef Tenderloin and medley of whites/blush with grilled scallops  

We host long time dear friends Bob & Gloria, visiting us from Delray Beach, at our vacation home in Destin, FL. 


We grilled out beef tenderloin, served with haricot verts and baked potatoes, and grilled seared scallops on buttered herb toast points. 

With the Caesar salad, grilled scallops and a selection of artisan cheeses, we enjoyed a medley of easy drinking casual sipping white wines and a blush.

Carpenter Creek Cellars Steuben Indiana Rose’ NV

Having fun with and paying tribute to Bob’s and our Hoosier heritage, I opened this Indiana wine from an Indiana producer composed of Indiana grapes.

This is from Carpenter Creek Cellars, a farm winery housed in a quaint picturesque renovated 1919 barn midway between Chicago and Lafayette, IN. 

We tasted, then acquired this label at the producer winery off I-65 in northern Indiana during one of several visits over recent years. During our visit at that time, we tasted a half dozen of their wines and ended up buying several labels. This is a bit remarkable as they exceeded my expectations for Indiana produced wines such that we brought home nearly a case. This is a testament to the craft and handiwork of partner proprietors Ed Courtright who wanted to grow grapes in northern Indiana to supply wineries in the area, and winemaker Randy Rottler, who had dreams of starting a small winery.

This label is 100% Steuben, a Hybrid wine grape that is primarily grown in the northeastern US, particularly in the wine regions of New York State, Pennsylvania and Michigan, as well as Indiana and Ohio. The variety is particularly cold-hardy, vigorous and productive as well as being quite disease-resistant. It is known for its vibrant red color and is often used to produce rosé wines such as this. 

Steuben grapes have a distinct flavor profile, with notes of strawberry, cherry, and a hint of spice. The wine made from Steuben grapes is typically medium-bodied, with a refreshing acidity and a slightly sweet finish. 

This was much better two days later with a selection of artisan cheeses and crackers. 

Winemaker’s notes - A gentle off dry blush wine which exhibits raspberry and strawberry notes with a citrus finish.

Blood orange colored, light bodied, moderately sweet/dry, strawberry and raspberry notes with hints of tea leaves and tangy cinnamon spice. 

Turning to the main course delicious grilled tenderloin of beef, Bob brought from home a St Emilion Grand Cru Classe’ so I opened from our modest remote cellar a like AOC and vintage, for a mini-horizontal comparison tasting. 




Chateau Monbousquet St Emilion Grand Cru 2020 

The Chateau Monbousquet St. Emilion estate can trace its history all the way back to 1540 when it belonged to François de Lescours, before it became the property of the well-established De Carles family where it remained for almost 150 years. The beautiful, classically styled chateau was built in 1648 by Jacques de Geres and today, is the private home of Gerard Perse and Chantal Perse along with the rest of the Perse family.

At the close of World War II, the Querre family purchased Chateau Monbousquet and set upon improving the quality of the wines. In 1993, they sold the estate to Gerard Perse and Chantal Perse for $9 million. Chateau Monbousquet was the first vineyard purchase by Gerard Perse, who later went on to acquire several more properties. 

The first vintage of Chateau Monbousquet for Gerard Perse was the difficult 1997 which produced only a few barrels or somewhere between 300 and 600 bottles out of the entire harvest.

Shortly after Gerard Perse obtained Chateau Monbousquet, he began renovating the estate completely rebuilding the winemaking facilities and cellars and constructing an entirely new barrel-aging cellar.

The 32 hectare Monbousquet Saint Emilion vineyards are divided into three sections with more sand and clay in the north, and more gravel with sand in the south, and are not considered among the best in St. Emilion. They average 40 years of age and are planted to 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Some were replanted to increase the proportion of Cabernet Franc over Merlot to better match the varieties to their most appropriate soils.

Perse improved the quality of the wines, also partly by intentionally striving for lower yields thereby increasing their concentration.

In 2013, motivated by French tax laws, Gerard Perse sold a portion of Chateau Monbousquet to a large, anonymous, French, pension fund. This allowed his daughter Angelique and her husband, Henrique Da Costa to eventually take over all the Perse-owned wineries which by this time included Chateau Pavie, Chateau Bellevue Mondotte, and Chateau Pavie Decease. as well as their estates in the Cotes de Castillon appellation.

This 2020 Monbousquet is a blend of 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and was aged in French oak barriques, 50% of which are new.

This release was rated 96 points by Jeb Dunnuck, 95 by James Suckling and Wine Spectator, and 91-93 by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, and 92 by Decanter and Wine Independent.

This is packaged in a heavier, slightly larger than normal Bordeaux bottle, more akin to more expensive ultra-premium wines. 

Deep inky purple-black color, full bodied, complex but nicely balanced, concentrated bright vibrant blackberry, plum and hints of black cherry fruits with notes of cassis, chocolate, tobacco, charcoal and herbs, with plush tannins on a fragrant earthy finish.

Chateau Clos Junet St Emilion Grand Cru 2020
 
We tasted and acquired this wine at the Tour of Bordeaux Wine Dinner at The Wine World Wine Bar here in Destin last fall, one of the carefully selected featured wines paired with a dinner course. The dinner’s food and wine pairings were prepared in collaboration with and was currated by guest speaker Cassidy Stiebing, Regional Sales Director and Bordeaux expert from Twins, a French Bordeaux Negociant and US Distributor for the wines.

Chateau  Clos Junet, located just west of the picturesque village of Saint Emilion, is owned and managed by Patrick Junet today. The family-owned and managed property has belonged to the Junet family for more than 100 years, having purchased the estate back in 1890, it has remained in the hands of Junet family since.

The diminutive 3-hectare, Clos Junet estate vineyard is planted to 65% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Malbec. They have old vines with the oldest being more than 80 years of age. The terroir is typical St Emilion limestone, chalk, sand, and clay soils.

Clearly, a more modest wine than the bigger, bolder and more present Chateau Monbousquet, this provided an interesting comparison between two wines from the same appellation and vintage. A more discerning taster, might also pick up the subtle difference in the blend with the Malbec as opposed to the Cabernet Sauvignon.

This is a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec. 

This release was ted 92 points by James Suckling and 91 Points by Wine Advocate. 

Bright ruby colored, medium bodied, fruity, round bright vibrant tangy red and black plum and berry fruits with notes of floral, clove spice and sweet tobacco and hints of oak on the moderate tannins laced finish. 

RM 89 points. 


After dinner we were treated to sumptuous tira misu and fresh berries.

For our family birthday celebration dinner gathering, posted herein - Aged vintage wines for family birthday dinner, son Ryan brought from his home cellar (below) this single vineyard designated Cabernet Franc for tasting with the grilled beefsteaks. This extraordinary label release received two 100 points reviews by James Suckling and by Robert Parker. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate compared it to a great vintage of Chateau Lafleur, his “favorite Bordeaux”.

The wines of El Enemigo are from winemaker, Alejandro Vigil, and a historian, Adrianna Catena. They pay tribute to the European immigrants who first settled in Argentina to make wines as good as or finer than those of their old homelands. By 1936, Malbec and Petit Verdot were Argentina’s most widely planted varietals, and their blend was considered the ultimate in refinement and aging potential.

El Enemigo translates as ‘the enemy’, taking into account “the fact that at the end of any journey, most remember only one battle — the one fought within (the original enemy)”.

El Enemigo is produced at BESA, located in the Vista Flores district in Tunuyán, Mendoza. The facility is named for the unique aspect of Mendoza’s high-altitude winemaking region nestled in the foothills of the Andes Mountains.

Winemaker and co-owner Alejandro Vigil is a soil expert, winemaker, and agronomist. He is also the Chief Winemaker at Bodega Catena Zapata, the former head of the soil division at Argentina’s Wine Institute, and the former head of the soil division of INTA.

Partner Adrianna Catena is the daughter of Nicolás Catena. She has a Master’s Degree in Early Modern Iberian Atlantic history from the University of Oxford. Her dream is to continue the family legacy of winemaking while pursuing her passion for history and writing from a cottage surrounded by vineyards in the Argentine Andes.

This label release is from the Gualtallary sub-appellation in the Mendoza Appellation in the Cuvo wine region of Argentina. Mendoza is Argentina’s largest and best-known winemaking province. responsible for over 70% of the country’s enological output. 

Mendoza is set in the eastern foothills of the Andes Mountains where the climate is dry and continental. Mendoza, divided into several distinctive sub-regions, including Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley, is the source of some of the country’s finest wines. 

Mendoza is best known for Malbec, the most prolific and popular varietal, originally a Bordelaise variety that was brought to Argentina by the French in the mid-1800s. Also planted are the traditional Bordeaux varietals Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and this Cabernet Franc, as well as Syrah and Pinot Noir, for the reds. Mendoza's main white varieties include Chardonnay, Torrontés, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.

Bodega Aleanna 'Gran Enemigo' Gualtallary Single Vineyard Cabernet Franc Tupungato, Argentina 2019


This is a single vineyard designated bottling from the Gualtallary, Tupungato site. It sites in the Andes foothills at 4,822 ft (1470 m) elevation, a high density vineyard with10.000 plants per hectare in the rocky, limestone calcium rich calcareous, rocky soil, planted around 1997. It includes 5% Malbec in the blend  sourced from the same area within the north of Uco Valley. It was aged in French oak barrels new and 3rd use, and in 100-year-old foudre for 15 months.

Winemaker Notes - Gran Enemigo Gualtallary is bold, complex, and rich, with intense aromas of ripe blackberry, wood, olive, thyme, spice, and vanilla. Full-bodied and balanced with structured tannins, good acidity, and a long finish. Certified Sustainable by Bodegas de Argentina. Gran Enemigo Gualtallary is excellent with grilled meats and various cheeses.
 
This was rated 100 points by north James Suckling and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, who also gave 100 points to the 2013 release. At 100 points, this is one of the finest vintages for this single-vineyard blend of Cabernet Franc with some 15% Malbec.

It was rated 97 points by Vinous, 95 by Descorchados and Tin Atkins, and 94 by Wine Spectator.

Like other highly rated wines, this is more about the lack of any retractions or faults than it is about predominant high notes. 

Displays a deep purple color, medium to full bodied, round, elegantly balanced, smooth and polished, bright vibrant tangy acidity on the juicy huckleberry and blackberry fruits with notes of spice, ash,  hints of mountain herbs, mint and cassis, with dry chalky texture on fine-grained tannins laced flavorful complex finish. 

RM 93 points.
